Internet Connection Sharing [usb and nic]

i have a DSL modem that can only give USB connection..
so USB connection is going to a PC, which has a NIC card also

Goal is to connect multiple PCs to internet… so i m trying to share an internet connection.. I have shared the internet connection in windows xp computer with the USB connection and LAN [nic] connection. LAN connection ip settings are as follows
LAN card Ip: 192.168.1.32
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers: copied the ones from USB connection
The cable from that pc goes to the WAN port in router.
Router’s ip is 192.168.1.1

Three normal ports of the router have an end point to three PC NIC cards.. ip addresses are 192.168.1.2 thru 192.168.1.4

so, i go to the 192.168.1.4 PC and ping the router… that works
from the same PC, i ping 192.168.1.32[ip of pc thats sharing connection] – that works

wat do i need to do to connect to internet from 192.168.1.4 PC???
i haven’t done anything in router yet… plz help if u can

Azten DSL Modem
NetGear Router
WinXP PCs
Router address: 192.168.1.1
WinXP PC LAN card Ip: 192.168.1.32
Default gateway 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers: copied the ones from USB connection

Re: Internet Connection Sharing [usb and nic]

May be I am confused or cannot make any sense or you haven't defined it the way I am expecting.

You cannot put a router if u are connection sharing from a machine, becuase then that machine is a router itself.

Now, here is the simple routing,

Connect DSL modem to with your Windows XP & get a routeable IP through DSL modem,

Assign an IP address

192.168.1.1
to the NIC of the same machine, & instead of a router use a switch & connect it to a switch. Now connect other machines to switch as well with IP's starting from 192.168.1.2 (onwards) making 192.168.1.1 as a gateway.

It will work.

If u are using router then u need to connect your DSL modem to your router & make it the gateway, and in most USB cases that is not possible because routers are rarely USB.

Re: Internet Connection Sharing [usb and nic]

thanks so much... may be i didn't explain it clearly, but u still got it... u know exactly what i am trying to do... since that modem is a USB modem, i can't do simple ICS with a router which we all do with ethernet... hence this weird setup -- its for someone in pak

ok, so this is what we will do --- please review and tell me if its right
1. Replace the router with the switch
2. Change the LAN nic ip settings to
IP: 192.168.1.1
Default gateway 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers: ( please tell me what goes here )
3. connect the user desktops to switch and assign ips 192.168.1.2 onwards with the default gateway of 192.168.1.1.
DNS Servers: ( please tell me what goes here )

Re: Internet Connection Sharing [usb and nic]

You can just use the router and not use the WAN port

The USB would be the one with the Default Gateway address. The NIC DG would be blank

Stick with the DNS settings you get from the ISP

Again, use the DNS server address from ISP (Hint: Your PC with ICS should pick up the DNS addresses when it picks up the IP from the DSL modem)

Good Luck!

Re: Internet Connection Sharing [usb and nic]

got it... thanks Najim and Tofibaba ... I will give u an update on it

just one question... i m not sure if it really happened... when we connected the cable from PC's NIC to router's regular port last time (2 days ago), i think the pc showed "network cable disconnected" again, not sure.. .... just want to make sure we can use this router as a switch... i will try that anyway tonight..

Re: Internet Connection Sharing [usb and nic]

I am going whoozy after reading all this :frowning: I am sorry Mr.Genius I can do networking but you have confused me. Therefore, I shall take my leave :teary1:

Re: Internet Connection Sharing [usb and nic]

Thanks TofiBaba and Najim,

It worked. sorry for the late feedback... it has been working for 8-9 days

Re: Internet Connection Sharing [usb and nic]

Good for u dude. Glad to be of serivce!

Re: Internet Connection Sharing [usb and nic]

Genius, can u not spend 15 bucks on a new router with 4-5 ports, instead of going thru all the hassle

Re: Internet Connection Sharing [usb and nic]

Genius, glad to hear that.

Todd,

He rather have to buy a new DSL modem with Ethernet port instead.
