I find it really awkward that many Pakistani people I have come across can actually have personal conversations via skype , facebook and social media while at work ..
This friend works in a virtual university and is on skype almost all day with their family ! when asked how they manage to not get caught they casually said oh, its not only me, everyone does it !
someone told me the other day that people even have the habit of random chatting , using internet at work ..
question is , is that for real? do businesses in Pakistan not have any kind of block on personal use of internet during work hours? Over here, in the UK we cant even think of doing it either out of moral responsiblity or out of company policy !
CB it totally depends on the organisation. i'm an audit trainee and I've been to many good companies where there were strict IT policies in place. Facebook and most social media sites were totally blocked. And it mostly depends on your nature of work as well, even if you have free access of internet and Wifi , does your work pressure really allow you to have that free time on the internet? No! i hardly use internet during my office hours.
Mary, believe me I get surprised that two people at this specific university of lahore have their babies right next to them, like they are playing with them, feeding them, etc etc and then on skype almost all day long and are getting paid Rs 60K+ … and to top it all they are lecturers so its not even an admin position or something !
And then I know people working in a multinational and in a group on linkedin they were discussing about random chatting and how they get to spend time on internet only at work ..
So yeah, that made me think seriously that the work environment in Pakistan isnt very professional perhaps .. but you are right, it might be that only a handful firms out there might apply strict rules in place on usage of internet for personal reasons
Well, I think while one can some how use internet and social media at times in my previous office as the room was separate. Skype is a little bit off, but in open offices like the norm these days its not that easy. Like in my present office my boss sits behind me, with his head popping every now and then like an intelligence officer. Hence no internet now, a little bit when he is not on his seat...
I use skype at my work. It's not blocked cause we have to use it for communication within the office. Though I'll admit to using it to chat with friends outside work. Then there's facebook, I don't use that at work, cause it's too visible.
You will get reprimanded if any of your extra-curricular activities affect your work.
So Mr. Mard, are you saying it is OK to steal from employer - India Pak West etc irrelevant.
how did you conclude that even?
just so you don't come up with asinine assumptions again, it is BS to allow employees to use office net for social networking and messengers/chat etc.

Thank you Mr. Mard. I would respectfully submit the conclusion I drew was from your post - which while not asinine, did leave room for interpretation. Your response leaves little doubt about your asininity, if that is a word.

Its not OK to steal. However, i dont know if using internet for some random personal stuff like a 5 min email check, or a quick message to someone can be classified as stealing. Yes, if you do it all day, or for extended periods of time, specially when you have actual work to do, then yes, its wrong.
However, on the same token, many a times, we receive calls from our offices at home, asking us to do something or the other.....or sit late at the office without overtime, or come in on weekends.....so it goes both ways.
I work in a non govt organization and I have friends and family who work in private companies/universities and no one is allowed to use internet at work.
Social networking sides are blocked. Skype managers are handled by the IT dept of the company so they keep an eye on everything.
Our Urdu teacher used to write a line on the blackboard and our task was to write it neatly in our notebooks (copies) over and over until the period was over. It was called ‘likhaai’. Meanwhile she was busy knitting.
I am so thankful to her. Unn ki vajah se hamain khoosh-khati aa gaee.
And on the original topic.
This question has always intrigued me.
Most people on this forum are constantly connected at work.
I don’t know how they keep their focus on work.
It is so tempting to keep checking back on updates and responses every 2 minutes.
And no, multi-tasking does not work and has been discredited as counter-productive.
BTW, this is not unique to Pakistan.
Visit any online forum and the same theme repeats.
The cost of lost productivity because of personal internet usage at work must be in the billions of dollars.
In our office, in free hours, we are officially allowed to surf internet, play badminton, or play some network games like N4S, counter strike etc. We can take a pause to refresh ourself even if we are at work.
So agree with maryqass that it depends on the organisation and nature of work.
