I think people only take this seriously when someone commits suicide due to online bullying or something horrendous like that.
Why does someone need to physically get hurt for us to start looking for the internet user responsible?
People hide behind the veil of anonymity to insult, curse, threaten people and their families online. I recently saw a hate comment left on a makeup guru’s video on youtube and the person was threatening to kill her after work. o_O
His comment got reported and deleted and that was that. Am I the only one who thinks such people should be held accountable?
People should definitely be held accountable. There was a case about a man in England (I think) "trolling" the Facebook page that was dedicated to a girl who had died in an accident. I think the court ruled that he had mental disabilities.
I think the internet takes away the body language and tone, as well as the accountability, that a real life interaction contains. We have had print media for generations, but it required a certain level of respectability to communicate via that medium. The internet allows any moron with an opinion with a platform to spew their filth. Those who were kept in check by social norms, or a lack of credentials, are now free on the internet. Case in point: the right wing radio circuit in America.

LOL , I read your post with interest and then this comment of yours ruined it all. I am not right or left winger , but I would not make sweeping statement like this to keep my credibility intact.

Fair enough. I was speaking in hyperbole but having listened to Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and their ilk at Fox News, I'm pretty comfortable with my statement.

They have credibility with their blind followers or morons , people who have even one ounce of grey matter know that they are showmen and they are putting a show on , they make loads of money for what they say and how they say it with passion and fervor.
So how can they be credible ? It is not even their own political agenda , they are hired microphones and actors.

They're not credible. That's my point. The blogs on the web give credence to their views. Blogs that didn't exist 30 years ago, when Glenn Beck might not have had a national audience.
Anyways, let's not diverge into a debate about the right wing in America (or elsewhere). The OP asked an important question which merits discussion.
