International Students in Canada..

Hey guys,

i’m asking on behalf of a friend who is studying in Halifax. is it true that international students in canada are restricted to 20 hours on campus? in order to do an internship somewhere, will she need a SIN# and a valid work permit? what are her options?

any info or advice would be appreciated.

thanks in advance…

Is she at Dalhousie?

Check out this http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-opps.html

i don’t know about the hourly restriction, but i can try to ask someone who is also an international student here in Canada (although not in Halifax). Will get back to you, Insha’Allah, once i hear back from him.

i don't know the 20 hr restriction, but i had a friend who was an international student from pak who was workin as a floor RA in a dorm for 2 yrs...i think u get paid more than 20 hrs/week for that job...

Nadia: thanks so much! i think she will find the info very helpful. and yes, she is at Dalhousie. i forwarded it to her, and if u have any more info, do post it, or PM me.

DeSiMuNdA: what is a floor RA, what does he do :konfused: i missed out on the joys of dorming… chalo, anyway, thanks for ur info

All I know is, the Provincial Government in Manitoba has allowed 20 hours a week for International Students on or off campus work. In the summer they are allowed 40hrs/week.

Even 20 hours with a full study load is alot.

^ she is looking for a summer job or internship. here in amreeka u can do 40 hours in the summer. but you're right, during the semester if you wanna do justice to your classes then 20 hours can be a lot.

peoples champ: wohi tau, i am trying to find out if she is allowed to do something OFF campus relevant to her field of study that will also help her manage her living costs.

i posted my reply before i even read your pm. Sorry if i seemed curt in my reply above. i don’t check gupshup as often as i check my hotmail, so if you have a time-sensitive question, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me and i will Insha’Allah reply ASAP.

i used to go to DAL as well so i am pretty familiar with how it works. Unfortunately i was never there as an intl student, but she will find a great deal of support Insha’Allah. There are tonnes of intl students there. Dalhousie has an International Student & Exchange Services department, which i THINK is located in the Student Services building (if they haven’t changed it). The Student Services building is located on the main level of the Killam Library, room# G28. Their phone # is 902-494-2404. If she has not arrived in Halifax yet from Pakistan (or wherever she is coming from), let me know and i can make any phone calls for her on her behalf so she doesn’t have to incur long-distance charges. Don’t hesitate for a second to let me know how i can be of help, i mean it. :flower1:

International Student Association (club) http://is2.dal.ca/~disa/Links.htm

There’s an International Student Handbook that your friend may be interested in; scroll down to Section 4 “Working in Canada” http://www.dal.ca/~studyab/ISS_Handbook.html Unfortunately they don’t seem to have updated this website recently. This site is a list of contacts she will find very useful from this site http://www.dal.ca/~studyab/contacts.html Melissa Ferguson [email protected]
seems to be the person she should e-mail about the 20 hours issue.

Nova Scotia Employment Program for Students http://www.gov.ns.ca/econ/pep/nseps/

This is the Student Employment Centre at DAL http://as01.ucis.dal.ca/ses/index.cfm

Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps http://www.gov.ns.ca/enla/ess/ycc/employ.htm

By the way, what is she studying there? Would give some indication of what sort of internship she would/should be interested in.

If she wants support from the Maritime Muslim Student Association, tell her to check out this website www.dal.ca/mmsa/ Nice website.

i think that’s all for now :konfused: If i think of something more, i’ll post it in this thread or e-mail you. Like i said in my pm, we’re all here to help each other. :flower1: So never ever hesitate to let me know if she needs anything specific. Unfortunately i don’t live in NS anymore, otherwise i could have done so much more for her. i hope she feels welcome in Canada. Keep us posted, eh.

Nadia - damsel to the rescue!!! thanks again

Is it hard to move to Canada for a British guy?

Phoenix, No problem :flower1:

LegBreakGoogly, Depends upon many factors. Are you a student? i had a British friend who came here to study, he said it was very difficult. But everyone’s experiences are unique.

Word of advice: don’t move to Toronto though. Too many black people there :stuck_out_tongue: :mocking:

i’m just kidding. You should know i am going to pull your leg about that, again and again, darn justifiably so :hoonh:
