ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has been bestowed the prestigious and world-renowned “International Jurists Award – 2012” for his unique and tremendous contribution in the field of administration of justice, a press release issued by the Supreme Court said on Saturday.

The award, which is presented by the International Council of Jurists, is in recognition of the tireless and fearless endevours made by Justice Chaudhry towards administration of justice in the country against all odds, the press release added.

The ceremony is scheduled for May 28 in London, and the award will be presented by Rt Lord Phillips, President of Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in the presence of chief justices, law ministers, members of parliament, bar leaders, law teachers and journalists from different countries invited for the occasion.

The chief justice was also awarded The Medal of Freedom by the Harvard Law School Association in 2007.

Tribune

A moment of ‘Iftikhar’ for the nation. He has not only been taking on corruption mafia head-on, he has also emerged as a ray of hope for a nation groping for a way out of darkness of despair. My friends from PPP may not like Justice Iftikhar a bit, but they should be happy for the international recognition of the role of Pakistan’s higher judiciary.

Re: International Jurists Award for Justice Iftikhar

This “international council of jurists” is not much “international”. It is actually run by Indians. The president is Adish Aggarwala.

What is laughable is that Iftikhar Chaudhry himself is the vice president of this organization. Just check his name on the same webpage under Vice Presidents.

In other words, he is conferring award on himself

Like someone said, well deserved award for freeing all terrorists.

Re: International Jurists Award for Justice Iftikhar

interesting, so you think if CJ awarded himself this award the rest of the members were just silent?

Re: International Jurists Award for Justice Iftikhar

Seems like mili bhagat (as they say in Urdu). :hoonh: The organization probably got together and decided to give the award to Iftikhar Chaudhry. It’s pretty sad and condemnable, if you look at it. There’s a reason why in the corporate world, workers within a company are usually prohibited from participating in promotions and giveaways a company is running.

This reminds me of the ‘bought award’ that Shahid Afridi got (either he gave himself or someone bought it for him). In this case a scam organization gives away laminated awards for $440 a piece. But the thing about these type of awards is that as soon as you get one the media spreads it as a joyous occasion, without doing some research or confirming. Half the country knows about it. And when it turns out to be a scam, then there is 0% rebuttal. They lap up all the free, positive publicity, the public is fooled, mission accomplished. Take a look:

Re: International Jurists Award for Justice Iftikhar

^ but how do we know whether CJ was actually involved in decision making for that award or not? it more of assumption than facts.

Re: International Jurists Award for Justice Iftikhar

I can understand, but he shouldn’t have taken it then.

Like I said, if I own a company, and it gives me an award, that’s pretty weird. If I work for a company and I get awarded, then that’s okay. Iftikhar Chaudhry, as the vice president of this organization, should have known better. Much better.

Even if he is innocent and got nothing to do with it, it does not reflect positively on him, that’s for sure.

Re: International Jurists Award for Justice Iftikhar

didnt know he was the vice president of International council of Jurists.

Re: International Jurists Award for Justice Iftikhar

Yes, and shame on our 2-bit media on not doing their research either. :bummer: The first thing I would have done if I were a journalist was to find what this International Court of Jurists is. These are small things in the grand scheme of things, but we have to remember that small things make big ones.

Re: International Jurists Award for Justice Iftikhar

yes I remember when media reported on CJ’s award, they never mentioned that he’s the vice president as well. but again, we dont really know yet, if he was actually part of decision making for the award.

Re: International Jurists Award for Justice Iftikhar

I know, but like I said, decision making or not, him being part of the organization really throws the independence of the award out of the window. The thing with being on such a high post (country’s highest judicial authority), one has to be extra careful, so as not to give others an opportunity to voice controversy. :snooty: In fact, being the vice president of the said organization, he should actually have declined the award when it was being planned internally.

Re: International Jurists Award for Justice Iftikhar

I think what matters more is the list of presidents who actually run an organization.
These days everybody who is anybody is on Wikipedia. And this organization is absent on wiki, which tells a lot about how famous or credible it is.
