I will soon start interior designing my new home … and havnt a clue where to start from .. Should i look for carpets first and then try to match the curtains and wall paints or accessories etc ? .. or should i look for curtains first and then try to match stuff with it ?
this is from watching countless hours of HGTV you're supposed to start with an insipiration. it can be anything; a painting, a couch, a color scheme, a pretty decoration piece. then you decide on a wall color. that will essentially ground your whole room. make sure if you're not doing carpet, it doesn't clash horribly with your wooden floor. then go on from there. last thing to be should be accessories for that particular room. the accessories tend to just fall into place without doing much research.
start with the costliest item you already have (or will buy) and start from there. it could be a couch or carpet for example. carpets are good start due to all the variations in style and colours to chose from.
and what kind of style do u want? modern? contemporary?
read lots of magazines and watch HGTV. lots of ideas from there.
if u like to change things up a lot, the easiest way is to go with neutral colours (taupe, beiges, browns) and add some colour with accessories (cushions, decor pieces), and if u get bored of that colour, get new accessories with a different colour.
Also paint. look at ur space if its small or a large space. u dont want to make the room look smaller but using dark paint everywhere. maybe have an accent wall?
try to put everything against the wall and have a huge empty space in the middle. think of when u have guests over, how will they sit to converse and mingle?
if u have a small space, try to get thigns that have dual function with storage space.
afshi’s given some great ideas. your best bet to get an idea of how to start would be to watch home reno channels like HGTV. trust me, it gets your creative juices flowing.
also what room do you want to tackle first? the bedroom or drawing/living room? you also need to get a feel for what your style is. country, contemporary, minimilistic etc. tour around stores that carry home style things (dunno what you have in your area) and notice what kind of things attract you the most. is it that couch with the minimalistic lines or the really boudouir type? colors, patterns etc. once you get that down, then you can begin to pinpoint what’s the first thing you want.
bedrooms generally IMO should be clean, and calm areas. light blues and browns look really nice in a main bedroom. in a drawing room you can go a bit wilder in terms of color but not TOO wild, but that’s just my opinion. golds, browns, shades of red look nice in a living room. for paint you can also go to a place whcih has paint chips and just pick one you like and start from there. btw i’m really focusing on paint here cuz i prefer that, but you could also do wallpaper and again its the same thing. what color base, pattern, what area it goes in, etc.
also, grab an ikea catalogue…it really gives you really nice ideas for how to decorate your area, and usually has very neutral color schemes especially for the walls, so if you like that kind of stuff then that’s a very good place to start.
for example, for our kitchen, my mom wanted something that would work with our original countertop color. so she picked the color of this really pretty table cloth and that’s the color of our walls right now. just changing the color of the walls really gave our kitchen a different look. it’s a bit of a dark color than previous but i like it. i wanted to paint the backsplash too, but my mom changed her mind, but if she had let me that would give the kitchen IMO some more oomph. for my bedroom, my main focus was the paint color. i picked it and then i had a few other things lying around that i wanted to put up on my walls, and everything just went on from there.
once you get an idea of what you want to do, then i’ll be sure to find you pics and color schemes
Select your style(modern/traditional etc) first and plan accordingly like Afshi said.. Also see if you want a similar style for the whole house or if you want different looks for different rooms. Your rooms can be theme-based color-wise or style-wise. I’d say don’t make every room TOO different, I mean there should be a nice flow throughout the space and the rooms shouldn’t look detached from each other.
Going with neutrals for bigger and more expensive things is a good idea.. bring colors in smaller items, like things that you might want to change once in a while.
If you don’t have time to watch tv, grab home decor magazines or get ideas from websites, they have lots of nice ideas.. Also visit the sections of stores that display full room settings (dunno if you have that there) you can really good ideas how to bring things together which otherwise might be difficult just by looking at individual items in that store.
Whatever you do, do not ignore the “functionality and comfort” aspects. For me these are the most important things, everything else follows.
And like Khummi suggested don’t make the space overly crowded. I personally prefer minimal style, too much going on may look claustrophobic if not done right and isn’t easy to maintain.
Thanks so much for your valuable input ladies …Khumar , I totally agree with not overcrowding the place … thats one of my major concerns while designing …
Now after some research , I know for sure that I want warm tones rather then cool tones … I want the home to give out a warm aura throughout.
For the living room, I am thinking this:
We have light wood color floor board … So perhaps I can follow a brown and blue theme ? like brown furniture , large brown curtains , with a single blue curtain on each side … and maybe I can get a brown rug … and brown and blue cushions .. thats it … how would it go?
see the pics of the color tones and advise me of your thoughts please :
On the other hand , kitchen and living room are on the same floor and I am so confused .. when i look at red themes I keep falling for them .. I am using wood color cabinets and red splashback in kitchen … so for the living room , red theme might work too ? Like brown furniture , brown large curtain with red single curtain on each side … red rug ? See this picture for the color tone:
Of the two I like brown/blue combo better for the living room. I guess it will be ok to use red in the kitchen too.. heard a stylist on tv once say that you can divide space by color so if you living-room + kitchen is once big space you may add different colors but I am not sure how much of red can you get away with in this scenario:hmmm: If they are different rooms, it shouldn’t be an issue at all.
Masi , the living room is one big room ... separate one , with a wall and a door ... then their is the stair case and finally another wall and door that leads to the kitchen and dining area....
The only three things in red in the kitchen and dining will be , the splashback between the cabinets .... the red single curtain on the door that leads to the garden and possibly red table runner .....
What do you advise ? I have suddenly thought of another thing as well ...Since M wants the three rooms upstairs to be done in different tones ... perhaps we can do a single red tone on the ground floor ( kitchen and living ) ....
and then I can use the brown blue tone in the master bed ... brown and olive tone in the second room and brown and peach or any other combination in the third room .. that way brown ( a neutral color will remain the common factor and give it that balance ) ...what say?
I agree with Khumar, you should definitely use your favorite decoration piece/picture/place as your inspiration and start from there. I saw the map of your home and it seems like you have a big living room so I think you should pick a bright dark color for the wall where you'll have your TV/entertainment center to create a focal point in the room because you really want that area to stand out. You can also pick both colors in dark shades but make sure you do the TV wall in a brighter color such as maroon or purple etc. I'm not sure where you'll have your sofas but if they'll be placed opposite the windows then becareful with paint you'll be using on sofa side wall because some paint colors may not look great in sunlight.
For kitchen and dining, I'll suggest you to pick light to medium colors because you need as much light as possible since there are no windows even though you have a garden door. The colors don't have to be boring beige or offwhite. You can pick some really nice colors in warm tones. You should check out HGTV website and paint brand sites for ideas....don't rush into picking colors it does take some time to really get an idea about what will work or what won't!! :-)
CA , thanks so much for the valuable input … see we have like the french doors and 5 windows in the kitchen dining wall … the kitchen and dining is the brightest room of the house … so i thought of red and creme theme for the kitchen and dining … … yesterday i went to see a high gloss kitchen and it was creme and aubergine combo , loooked so good
The living room has direct sunlight until 2 in the afternoon …i.e if sun ever comes out in the UK … khair … so yeah we are thinking of making the TV wall bold …
please do keep in mind the amount of light one room receives … which side of the house is “lighter” … in that way, you should keep in mind how dark (in colors) you can go … cuz if the room doesnt get much light, you should comparatively keep it in light-tones … also keep in mind of how light effects the paint on your walls … if your windows have any tint …
what i can be willing to do for you is that you give me a wide-angle (or not) picture of your room(s), and i could show you several options of colors on your walls .. this really helped me when i really wanted to paint a super dark green, but was unsure … so i just did a bit of photochopping, and figured it would look great, and went ahead with it
Guys I wanted to ask one other thing … I have recently been contemplating getting the ceiling painted bold rather then one of the walls… and then place a similar shade rug on the floor … how does that work? … good idea , bad one?
dont paint it too dark ... i dont know how high or low your ceiling is ... but i think in the picture ... because the color of the floor and ceiling is almost the same tone .... it feels like they're coming at you ... boxing you in ... if the floor was lighter, perhaps it wouldve worked better. unless you want that austrian closed-up cosy cottage winter feeling ...
I agree with farrah.. everything seems like coming on to you plus I have a feeling that it may seem different now but you'll grow out of it pretty soon, like in a month or so :D
