I knew this one guy that ministers to inner-city black youth.
he told me that the vast majority of kids were growing up with the mentality that if they didn’t cry “racism” they would have to compete with the rest of the communities in the various markets (school, work, etc) and actually perform. he said it was sad that in this day and age they continue to use this crutch.
he also found the attitude insulting to the efforts that historical figures had made to counter racism and prejudice.

There is a degree of truth in everything.
That doesn’t take away from the truth and the reality. The evidence is there for all to see. As kakee stated cracked coca one is but one example. Should we tell the person getting 10 times the sentence as another that racism is 50 50. I think not.
Kakees points are for the mist part not exaggerations. There may be an element of that.

I think what Monk said would work for the individual on a personal level i.e. thinking positively. But to apply this philosophy to a centuries old problem? I think that’s very idealistic. You can’t make a social problem (that has affected millions of people throughout centuries) go away just by imagining that it doesn’t exist. This philosophy or thought process is either deluded or over the top optimism. But, because I like Monk, so I would like to believe, in his case, it’s the latter. Monk is being very very optimistic.

I think Monk is trying to say that we can root out racism by not being racist ourselves. That when we are confronted with racism we do not return it … Gradually this will have an affect in society … Islam has taught us how to be race neutral … For all the race victims … When they complain on valid grounds the racists take it as an excuse and a form of counter-racism … So it does take a big person to overcome the prejudices … Unfortunately prejudice breeds more of itself … To declare victimisation … is seen as a form racism in reverse …

A question to American/Canadians…
Is it true that US has Black schools and Latino schools…basically schools with not enough ethnic diversity? I’ve also heard that these schools tend to perform poorly and students from such schools have hard time breaking out of their social class by not getting into good colleges and then not landing highly-paid jobs?

Blacks are indeed more likely to do crimes in US, that is not racist, because it is statistical … The reason is because the blacks have fewer opportunities to earn the same amount … When the blacks complain about this … There is retaliation … Of blame on blacks for using a “Crutch”.
This itself is racist …

Schools are there on town basis. So if a certain town has mostly latino community or African american like parts of bronx, brooklyn etc ofcourse there will be majority of students from the same racial segment. Otherwise its not enforced by anyone.
Regarding jobs, colleges etc I think things have changed a lot. Now Southern states may still have some effect due to conservative majority but generally its not counted as a major issue of discrimination. Infact latinos are getting more jobs due to being bilingual. And by 2021 (which is not far) Latinos will come up as the majority in US making Spanish as the first lang.

So when Salman Rushdie wrote his book which per Muslims is disrespectful of their Prophet, should the Muslims not even complain about it? Should they not provide a counter argument? If your answer is they should not complain. And shoukd not provide a counter, then you are at least consistent. This applies to Monk also.

Any kind of job. I dont think there is any discrimination unless the candidate has a criminal background in which case it really gets harder. For example I’m in IT industry and in my current job a ton of key management positions are occupied by African americans. By the way both latinos and african americans are very good in supporting people from their own community in terms of job etc.
Regarding school, if I generalize hard I think white schools certainly do much better than black ones. And the result being poverty, drug involvement, bad family backgrounds etc. But those who work harder do excel very well.

The black dominated school districts don’t have sufficient funds from property taxes. Folks from well to do neighborhoods get the advantage of a higher property tax base for their kids school. Less students per classroom, better equipment, better everything.
In our state which is left leaning, a measure to decrease number of students in poor schools was voted down. So much for the moderate Democrats. Their kids go to a nice school. Why would they care? As for rethugs, when it comes to the poor it is all about balancing the budget. When it comes to them, there ain’t a single handout they don’t like.

Poverty is a good reason.
Drug involvement is over simplifying. Getting locked up for say 10 years for crack cocaine. While cocaine the drug of choice for the whites gets a slap on the wrist. You lock up the males. What do you get. Broken families. (Not bad family background).
It is institutionalized racism that has to be first acknowleded. Then addressed. Then eliminated Presence of black managers notwithstanding.

My point is only that racism breeds more racism.
My personal value system does not allow me to profile people or be “vigilant” about people based on their profile. However, the police do profile people based on race. It does not make them racist to do so … but it is stupid and should not be done, because the stats forces them to view people under group headings. Everyone should be given their right to be treated as individuals and if people are not doing anything wrong they should be left alone. Stop and Search in its core concept is a threatening measure for society as a whole.
It so happens that in a given area more crimes are done by blacks … so a police officer may check more black people. As a result the blacks who are not intending to do anything criminal may carry weapons for such searches that they perceive as being racist. They may attack the police to defend themselves. Meanwhile, criminals will breed in this environment. The atmosphere will justify their ill intentions. As a community the blacks will start to be racist towards the whites, this will be felt by the whites and so on. Racism breeding more of itself.
There are some racist white people who join the police to exercise their racism and there are some blacks who feel all whites are racist and behave in a manner that even the whites who are not racist will despise them for the way they are being treated.
If I am victim of racism from the police - I will blame the individual … what tends to happen is that the victim blames the whole police outfit … or even the whole community of whites … The way to remove racism is to be very natural and trusting of all people as a default position. If people give bad vibes - it is probably a trust thing.
There is this white girl who works in my work place … for a good five months I sensed a lot of bad vibes from her … I guessed it may be a race thing … I just treated her nicely or in a civil manner and one day she saw me with a white colleague who I give lifts to in the morning to work and that was enough to slowly change her mind towards me. People need to be given the opportunity to see deeper than the skin. In order to do that interaction is a must.
We learn in Islam … No white superior to black or vice-versa, no Arab superior to non-Arab or vice-versa - except by good conduct.
We can destroy racism by dealing with racists in a way that shows them mercy and compassion - racists to me are like “barking dog” … The dog barks not because it hates me … but because it is unsure about me, it may be scared … showing it compassion will calm it down …
If anything profiling crimes should stop … we should encourage goodness in society and mix around a bit more - let people in to schools and centers and institutes and homes … and we will eliminate this problem. inshaAllah.
