Interesting Situation in Group B

The teams in group B are Pakistan, SL, NZ and SA.

Each team will play 3 games they MUST win 2 games to qualify for semi final.

Here’s the standing as of 10/20/2006.

Match 3 of 6 P W L NR T Points NRR For Against
Sri Lanka 2 1 1 - - 2 +0.594 419 / 86 420 / 98.1
New Zealand 2 1 1 - - 2 +0.414 360 / 100 274 / 86
Pakistan 1 1 - - - 2 +0.234 255 / 48.1 253 / 50
South Africa 1 - 1 - - 0 -1.740 108 / 50 195 / 50

All 3 teams (SL, NZ, SA) must win their next matches to qualify for semi where as Pak has to win only 1 out of their 2 matches because they won the first one.

InshAllah if Pak beat either NZ or SA they will be in semi final, mean while we can sit and wait to see who first qualify for semi final. SA will play SL on 24th, if SL wins they are through but if they lose they are out and than SA has to beat Pak to qualify. And Pakistan’s next game is on 25 against NZ. They will be under preasure if SA wins.

Re: Interesting Situation in Group B

^It's going to come down to run rate. And plus Pakistan is not safe yet.

Re: Interesting Situation in Group B

You are viewing it with wrong prospective. Basically SA has to win 2 games to remain in contest and everyone else just needs to win 1 game and then it will do to run-rate in which Pakistan is lagging behind.

Here is the situation

Pakistan beat SA
SL beat SA
NZ beat PAK (mairey mun main khak)

SA Points = 0
SL Points = 4
NZ Points = 4
PAK Points = 4

Pak, SL and NZ all need to win 1 game each to be in deadlock

Re: Interesting Situation in Group B

Pa jee I said all 3 teams (NZ, SL, SA) MUST win all the next matches to stay in tournament. That means NZ is left with 1 and if they lose they are out. SL is left with 1 they must win to stay in. SA is left with 2 games and they must win both to stay in tournament. But with PAK they only have to win 1 game even though they are left with 2.

As they say kan jaisay bhi pakro, ultay ho kay ya seedhay baat ek he hai. And here you are trying to bend over to just hold the ears

Re: Interesting Situation in Group B

Pak beat SLA beat NZ beat SA

I know life isn't quite as simple as the above equation but I sincerely hope that Pakistan beat both NZ and SA. NZ's batting is brittle as we saw the other day and this South African team (even they collapsed badly against NZ) is not as consistent and brilliant as the Cronje-led SA side of the 90's.

Re: Interesting Situation in Group B

PAK beat SLA beat NZ beat SA who chased 434 against Aussies...that means Pakistan is the best team in the world.

Re: Interesting Situation in Group B

No I did n't say that PAK is the best team. We all know which is the best side in world cricket but PAK most definitely has an advantage over NZ and SA in subcontinental conditions. Whether they make it count or not is another matter.

Re: Interesting Situation in Group B

Doesnt matter what other tams will do, Pakistan should win both the matches, then may be it will be first time in any big tournament that we will not be waiting for some miracle :)

Re: Interesting Situation in Group B

Looking at the performance of the teams, it seems like only SL, IND and PAK are the teams with the ability to score more than 200 scores on these wickets. So if Pakistan bat second in any or both of these matches, they have good chances to win.
It is important to carry some momentum in the semis, and PAK have to win both to have that momentum. If/must top PAK top poll B then they have good odds to make it to the final.
Good luck
