Re: Interesting Math
well. Q1: its a cubic equation, but because its a length the acceptable solution has to be positive and real. plugging in 2,4, and 3 just to get an idea of how the LHS behaves, 3 fits. if you want to be rigorous, you can go further and show no positive x less than 3 makes LHS >= 36, and that LHS is monotonically increasing for x >3, so theres only one positive root to the cubic equation.
Q2: x = rt(12.15) = 2.3.rt(5)
y = rt(45) = 3.rt(5)
x.y = 2.9.5 = 18.5
Re: Interesting Math
q3: let me try this without paper (if i look like a fool this is psyah’s fault
)
extending the perpendiculars of the tangents to meet at the center, and joining the vertical diagonal of the quadilateral, you get two identical right triangles, top angle being 1/2.60 = 30 degrees, bottom angle being 60.
area of triangles = 2. 1/2 . b * h = 5 * 5 *tan 60 = 25.rt(3).
area of arc = 1/3rd area of circle (because angle = 2*60) = pi * 25/3
area of shaded portion = area of triangles - area of arc = 25. rt(3) - pi * 25/3.
looks weird :\
Re: Interesting Math
yes…you might as well…cuz I’ve completely ignored the “order of operations” and I’m not about to re-do it.
too lazy.

Spot on for all three questions … I’m gonna have to make them harder … ![]()
Although for number 1 … Long division using trials can be quick way … And the important factor was the positive root. Well done
Re: Interesting Math
Ok guys and gals peace again …
You have 90 secs to complete this next puzzle … If you can do it in 90 or less then give the answer and explain how you got it …
For those who took longer … Explain you method too …
…
despite my poor art work there are only 5 different shapes … Each shape has a value, solve the question mark …
