--COACH PATATOES--

WHO SAYS THAT TV IS GOOD FOR YOU?
According to TIME MAGAZINE (issue 19 January-2004), Wisconsin resident Timothy Dumouched threatened to sue a cable company because they left him with free current affairs cable TV for four years after he requested that it be cancelled as it was paralyzing his thoughts and his children were getting bereft from heir education--more involved in the intricacies of politics before their maurity level for so.

he stated in his petition that current affairs or world affairs on the tube/telly was nothing but hogwash and simply focused to project the high society and a bunch of loonies. He said that it had started playing a role of procastrination and berefting children towards something which could never be their subject.

Re: INTERESTING LIVES and INTERESTING FACTS

--THE REAL FAWLTY TOWERS--

Basil Fawlty--the definitive bad-tempered hotel owner in John Cleese's classic BBC TV series, was based on a real hotel owner. In 1970, when Cleese was a member of of Monty Python's Flying Circus, the comedy gang stayed at the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay's Asheldon Road. Cleese found the owner, Donald Sinclair to be so rude that it inspired him to write FAWLTY TOWERS.

In 2002, when the series was released on DVD, Sinclair's widow broke her silence to give an interview to the Daily Telegraph; *"[Cleese] has held my family up to ridicule and made a lot of money doing it, " she complained. "My husband.....was a gentlemen and a very brave man."*

*A documentary on the DVD finds plenty of witnesses who give evidence to the contrary, with tales including Sinclair locking customers out at night if they came home too late for his liking. None of which impressed Mrs. Sinclair, who calls Cleese *'a complete and utter fool'. **

There is a reference to the real Fawlty Towers in the series (in the episode 'Gourmet Night'), when Basil tells Mrs. Gatsby and rs. Tibbs to 'go to Gleneagles for your dinner'.

During my 2005 visit to Scotland, it was after great efforts---and through couresy of Margaret Howard that I got Connie Booth's (Polly of Fawlty Towers) telephone contact and spoke for precisely 7 minutes during which--while thanking for all the complments I gave her (on her superb portrayal of Polly) but she didn't find my inquisitiveness on John Cleese--very interesting. I guess an obvious reaction for someone she left several years ago.

I have the entire collection of FAWLTY TOWERS on DVD and I watch almost all the episode at least once in two months. **GOURMET NIGHT one is tops!**

****Classic Quotes by James Madison (1751-1836) U.S. President ****

A pure democracy is a society consisting of a small number of citizens, who assemble and administer the government in person.

A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained in arms, is the best most natural defense of a free country.

As a man is said to have a right to his property, he may be equally said to have a property in his rights.

**Democracy is the most vile form of government… democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention: have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property: and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.
**

Do not separate text from historical background. If you do, you will have perverted and subverted the Constitution, which can only end in a distorted, *******ized form of illegitimate government.

I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.

If men were angels, no government would be necessary.

It is a universal truth that the loss of liberty at home is to be charged to the provisions against danger, real or pretended, from abroad.

It will be of little avail to the people that the laws are made by men of their own choice if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood.

Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.

***Learned Institutions ought to be favorite objects with every free people. They throw that light over the public mind which is the best security against crafty and dangerous encroachments on the public liberty.

Liberty may be endangered by the abuse of liberty, but also by the abuse of power.

Such democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.

Re: INTERESTING LIVES and INTERESTING FACTS

THE UNITED STATES ONE DOLLAR BILL
Take out a one dollar bill, and look at it. The one dollar bill you're looking at first came off the presses in 1957 in its present design. This so-called paper money is in fact a cotton and linen blend, with red and blue minute silk fibers running through it. It is actually material. We've all washed it without it falling apart. A special blend of ink is used, the contents we will never know. It is overprinted with symbols and then it is starched to make it water resistant and pressed to give it that nice crisp look.

If you look on the front of the bill, you will see the United StatesTreasury Seal.

On the top you will see the scales for a balanced budget.
In the center you have a mason's square, a tool used for an even cut.
Underneath this the Key to the United States Treasury.

That's all pretty easy to figure out, but what is on the back of that dollar bill is something we should all know. If you turn the bill over, you will see two circles. Both circles, together, comprise the Great Seal of the United States

The First Continental Congress requested that Benjamin Franklin and a group of men come up with a Seal.

It took them four years to accomplish this task and another two years to get it approved.

If you look at the left-hand circle, you will see a Pyramid.

Notice the face is lighted, and the western side is dark. This country was just beginning.

We had not begun to explore the West or decided what we could do for Western Civilization.

The Pyramid is uncapped, again signifying that we were not even close to being finished. Inside the capstone you have the all-seeing eye, an ancient symbol for divinity.

It was Franklin 's belief that one man couldn't do it alone, but a group of men, with the help of God, could do anything.

"IN GOD WE TRUST" is on this currency.

The Latin above the pyramid, ANNUIT COEPTIS, means,

"God has favored our undertaking."

The Latin below the pyramid, NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM, means,
"a new order has begun."

At the base of the pyramid is the Roman Numeral for 1776.
(MDCCLXXVI)

If you look at the right-hand circle, and check it carefully, you will learn that it is on every National Cemetery in the United States It is also on the Parade of Flags Walkway at the Bushnell, Florida National Cemetery , and is the centerpiece of most hero's monuments.

Slightly modified, it is the seal of the President of the United States , and it is always visible whenever he speaks, yet very few people know what the symbols mean.

The Bald Eagle was selected as a symbol for victory for two reasons:
First, he is not afraid of a storm; he is strong, and he is smart enough to soar above it.

Secondly, he wears no material crown. We had just broken from the King of England

Also, notice the shield is unsupported. This country can now stand on its own.
At the top of that shield you have a white bar signifying congress, a unifying factor.

We were coming together as one nation.

In the Eagle's beak you will read, " E PLURIBUS UNUM", meaning, "one nation from many people"

Above the Eagle, you have thirteen stars, representing the thirteen original colonies, and any clouds of misunderstanding rolling away. Again, we were coming together as one.

Notice what the Eagle holds in his talons
He holds an olive branch and arrows.
This country wants peace, but we will never be afraid to fight to preserve peace. The Eagle always wants to face the olive branch, but in time of war, his gaze turns toward the arrows.

They say that the number 13 is an unlucky number.
This is almost a worldwide belief.
You will usually never see a room numbered 13, or any hotels or motels with a 13th floor.

**But think about this: **
**13 original colonies, **
**13 signers of the Declaration of Independence, **
**13 stripes on our flag, **
**13 steps on the Pyramid, **
**13 letters in the Latin above, **
**13 letters in "E Pluribus Unum", **
**13 stars above the Eagle, **
**13 bars on that shield, **
**13 leaves on the olive branch, **
**13 fruits, and if you look closely, 13 arrows. **
**And, for minorities: the 13th Amendment. **

I always ask people, "Why don't you know this?" Your children don't know this, and their history teachers don't know this.

Too many veterans have given up too much to ever let the meaning fade.
Many veterans remember coming home to an America that didn't care.
Too many veterans never came home at all.

Share this page with everyone, so they can learn what is on the back of the UNITED STATES ONE DOLLAR BILL, and what it stands for... Otherwise, they will probably never know...

Re: INTERESTING LIVES and INTERESTING FACTS

In 1962-63, during the piercing chilly weather of Lahore, it was noticed at the AlHamra Arts Council that a young lad...visiting daily the auditorium to watch the artsite rehearse a stage play.

The young lad would sit and stare at the artiste...doing rehearsal and laughing and joking on adlibs etc.

He patiently kept observing them and this continued for a whole month till the stage played was scheduled and that young lad purchased a Rs.5 ticket and watched the play repeatedly.

At the end of the 7 days last show, that lad walked to the Director and requested that he be considered for a suitable role in some next venture the Council may have on cards.

The director first stared at that lad...then took a puff of his K-2 cigarette and coyly sat down stating "TUSSI AINJ KARO...K PAUREEAN CHARHH K UTTHAY JAO TAY THALLAY AAJAO....ASSI KHUD HEE JUJJ KARLAANGAY K TUANNOW ACTING AANDEE TAY NAHIN"

The determined lad did..just what the Director said...and said the director again "HAALE TOW KUCHH BHI NAHIN KARSAKTAY TUSSI....JAA PUTTAR....PHEIRR KADDI AANA"

Sad but not disillusioned...the young lad...walked off !!!

It was mid-1964 that this young lad turned up at the PTV's project station at Lahore where he found his way to ASHFAQ AHMED's room and without any invitation...he stood before four persons and delivered the famous dialogues of Dilip Kumar....from the great epic MOGHAL E AZAM...."Sheikho Ka Dil Koi Hindustan Ka Paya Takht Nahin Jis Pe Aap Hukumat Chala Saktay Hein......." and simply said Wa'Alaikum Assalam...and left...much to everyone's bewilderment.

When, on 26th November-1964, the PTV-Lahore station was commissioned, there came an urgent need for a young artiste to perform in a LIVE TV drama.....and a thorough search produced that young lad...who was asked to do the lead role....which he did superbyly and soon became the darling of TV plays!

On 26th November-2007, at an august ceremony held at the Convention Centre-Islamabad...to commemorate 43rd birthday of PAKISTAN TELEVISION (PTV), the then young lad, was called on stage by Bushra Ansari & Moin Akhtar...to receive his LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD from President Musharraf.....on the standing ovation he well deserved!

Ladies & Gentlemen, by all counts and numbers, MUHAMMAD QAVI KHAN*...the then young lad of early 60's, deserved the LTAW for his outstanding performances aglore and for being the FIRST male lead of PTV's first ever drama telecast on 26th Nov-1964...the day PAKISTAN saw its TELEVISION take birth at Empress Road-Lahore's half baked studios next to the Radio Pakistan.*

Re: INTERESTING LIVES and INTERESTING FACTS

First Time In Dubai’s Ice Cafe

Deep-freeze dining debuts in Dubai.

**Temperature at Dubai’s Times Square mall will crash to **
**sub-arctic levels as the Middle East’s first ice lounge, Chillout, opens **
this afternoon.

Frost things first
Almost everything at the restaurant is sculpted out of ice.
**Diners will sit on ice benches or chairs, eat at ice tables, out of ice **
**plates, drink from ice glasses served from a bar made of ice. **
" We want Chillout to be part of people’s lifestyle and not just
**a unique experience that will fade away with time. Spokesman, Sharaf **
Group "
**It even has an ice gallery showcasing Dubai’s landmarks. **
Complimenting that is an ice portrait of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad
**Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and **
**Ruler of Dubai. Freezing at minus 6 degrees Celsius the dining area is, **
well, biting cold.
A whopping Dh9 million investment, the restaurant is Dubai-based
**Sharaf Group’s enterprise while technical inputs came from Canada-based **
**Iceculture Inc, who are credited with building ice lounges around the **
world, informed a spokesperson for Sharaf Group.
"We want Chillout to be part of people’s lifestyle and not just
**a unique experience that will fade away with time," he said. **
**"It was a special operation which took a year and a half to **
carry out."
Chillout specs
The 2,400 sqft restaurant has three areas. The lobby and the
**lounge areas are separated by what is called the Buffer Zone. Once in **
**the lobby, visitors will be given thermal gear to protect themselves **
from the chilly conditions. It comprises a hooded parka (a heavy
jacket), disposable woollen gloves and a pair of shoes.
**Visitors are advised to first spend a few minutes in the Buffer **
**Zone to get acclimatised. The temperature in the buffer zone is set at 5 **
degrees Celsius which gives the body time to adjust to the sharp drop in
temperature in the dining area.
**Cold and beautiful **
**Once inside, the first thing I learnt was that, contrary to my **
fear, nothing was wet or dripping. I touched the walls, the sculptures,
**the tables and chairs to see if they were wet. They were all made of ice **
all right, but wet they were not.
**"It is a popular misconception that furniture at an ice **
restaurant is wet. It is the moisture on the surface of ice that gives
**it the wet feel. There cannot be any moisture at minus 6 degrees. Every **
bit of it turns to ice," explained the spokesperson.
**The restaurant, which will serve cold cuts, cheese, juices, ice **
creams and mocktails, can accommodate 40 guests, including relatively
**intimate table-for-two arrangements for couples. **
Seats are cushioned and acrylic-topped tables are adorned with
**decorative pieces sculpted from crystal clear ice. Vapour-mouthed **
visitors can feel secure in the knowledge that there are sheepskin
throws for the asking should things get too nippy for their comfort.
A looming chandelier in the middle of the lounge is made out of
**ice blocks strung together by cables, as are ice-beaded curtains in the **
couples’ section.
Impressive lights
In addition to the fact that this is a non-alcoholic restaurant,
**what makes Chillout different is that the lighting here is amazing. "It **
almost makes the ice a secondary feature," said Julian Bayley of
Iceculture Inc.
And it shows. The diffused lighting is constantly changing
**colours as it filters through clean blocks of ice, filling them with **
low-lux hues of varying patterns.
"As far as the ice component is concerned, there are several
features that are exclusive to Iceculture Inc. Also, the ability to
**produce portraits in ice with nothing more than food colouring and snow **
is something I don’t think has been done before, to my knowledge," added
Julian.
First-timers must be cautioned that the only thing hot in this
**restaurant is the samples of spices framed with ice blocks and embedded **
into the wall - of course, made of ice - providing a curious backdrop to
the juice bar.
Coming as it does in the hottest part of the year the timing of
**the coolest place in Dubai couldn’t have been better. **
Trivia
The ideal time to spend inside an ice restaurant is 30-40
minutes. While in other countries people are asked to leave after that
period, Chillout will not follow that policy.
**There are no toilets inside the restaurant. **
The workforce comprises people from cold countries such as
Romania and Russia to ensure they can withstand sub-zero conditions.
Workers at the restaurant are instructed to step out to normal
**temperature at regular intervals. **
Special lights called LEDs have been used. They do not emit heat
hence do not cause the ice to melt.
All the ice work was done by Iceculture Inc in Canada and was
**shipped to Dubai in temperature-controlled reefer containers. **
The flooring of the restaurant is made of special anti-skid
ceramic tiles.
Chillout is claimed to be the only ice restaurant in the world
to serve food round the year.
**Other countries that have ice bars and restaurants include the **
UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
Cool facts
Location: Times Square mall, between the 3rd and 4th
interchange on Shaikh Zayed Road
Opens: Thursday, June 21
**Timings: 2pm to 10pm (Saturday to Wednesday and 2pm to midnight **
on Thursday and Friday)
Tel: 04-341 8121
Cover charge: Dh60, includes thermal gear and a free mocktail
Cold cuts: From seating to glassware to cutlery and crockery,
**Everything is cut in ice **
