China discontinued the very successful voyages of Zheng He in 1400s.

If those voyages were allowed to continue then China could have owned the seas of medieval world, and** industrial revolution could have occurred in China instead of Western Europe**.

Re: interesting historical facts

Was he a Muslim? Why the voyages were discontinued if that could led to revolution?

Re: interesting historical facts

He was not a Han Chinese, but from Central Asia. Thus a Muslim. I read that his grandfather used to put the word Haji in front of his name, meaning that he had performed Haj.

He was a very successful admiral and diplomat. Another thing: He was made eunuch when he was 12, and he was 7 feet tall. Imagine how must have looked to Han Chinese who are probably no more than 5'5" on average.

His voyages were discontinued due to Mongol threat from North. Chinese thought that they could not afford expensive sea adventures in the presence of this threat. They discontinued the voyages, and instead built the Great Wall.

This put an end to Chinese sea power. And provided open territory to Western Portuguese and English fleet when they started their sea travels. There was no one to challenge them anywhere in the world.

The discontinuation also meant that China was cut off from Western and Islamic world. The world was changing and Chinese were left unprepared because they didn't know about it.

Joseph Niepce developed the world's first photographic image in 1827. Thomas Edison and W K L Dickson introduced the film camera in 1894. But the first projection of an image on a screen was made by a German priest. In 1646, Athanasius Kircher used a candle or oil lamp to project hand-painted images onto a white screen

Re: interesting historical facts

The first full moon to occur on the winter solstice, Dec. 22, commonly called the first day of winter, happened in 1999. Since a full moon on the winter solstice occurred in conjunction with a lunar perigee (point in the moon's orbit that is closest to Earth), the moon appeared about 14% larger than it does at apogee (the point in it's elliptical orbit that is farthest from the Earth).
