If anyone’s interested in the role of China in the Asia Pacific and the implications of its military modernisation on security in the region, this is a really good article. Henry Liu looks at American perspectives on China and how they have created an “imagined danger” with regards to what China is capable of. Its really insightful, and you should read it if you want to get a different perspective on China’s future role in the region and its relations with the US. From what I gather the US just comes across as being extremely paranoid about China’s potential danger and that strategically China cannot compete with America’s military might. China still lags some 20 years behind America technology wise.
