Inter-sect harmony

Very bad experience, how we are ready to indulge in intolerance.

I put Dr Israr Ahmed’s ‘Bayan ul Quran’ CD in my car and kept on listening to it on my way to office. In afternoon, when I was returning home, I gave lift to a colleague from Fiqah e Jafria and some other colleagues of Sunni sect.

A sunni guy asked shia colleague ’ tumhare haan roza kaisa hota hai?‘. Obviously the question was idiotic, but they are in good terms with each other and pass remarks to each other. khair, the shia guy got upset and said ‘No comments’. I interrupted and said to sunny guy, who is from Jamat e Islami’ ‘Jamatiyon main kaisa roza hota hai, asar ke baad to iftar nahin hota’. He said ‘Maghrib ke baad’. I said ‘magrib ke baad nahin, maghrib hone per’. The atmosphere then gone normal after this.

After this conversation, I played ‘Bayan ul Quran’ CD to avoid any conflicting conversation. When Dr Israr explained verse 3:28 given below, he said Shias uses this for Taqqaya concept.

‘Let not believers take disbelievers as allies rather than believers. And whoever [of you] does that has nothing with Allah , except when taking precaution against them in prudence. And Allah warns you of Himself, and to Allah is the [final] destination.’

Surat 'Ali `Imran [3:28] - The Noble Qur’an - ??? ???

I was not aware that he referred to Shia taqqaya, as I was concentrating on traffic, so missed the point. After a while, shia colleague asked who is the molana. I said ‘Dr Israr Ahmed’. He said ’ He got bias against Shia and these scholars created enmity between different sects and then Jamat e Islami guy interrupted that he just referred to Taqayya concept and don’t you people follow that? The debate was in fiery phase and that might have gone to reference about what Shia scholars say about Sunnis, but thanks God Jamat e Islami guys stop came and I switched off CD player.

Now it was me and Shia colleague in car and started complaining that look how these scholars create hatred and Zia did that and that… Finally I dropped him and reached home.

I was thinking how a comment can lead to heated debates? Don’t our scholars know sensitivity of issues between sects?

How could we gain harmony amongst different sects of Islam? Do we stop interacting with each other? Don’t talk about religion with each other.

Do you think that talking of huge similarities between different sects can help in promoting harmony?

Re: Inter-sect harmony

first, you should of not put in any cd knowing that you had two different people sitting with you. the result would of been much worse if you had put in a cd cursing the sahabas  .. point being, each scholar is speaking to his congregation, not to a mixed gathering so as a host you should be more sensitive next time.

Re: Inter-sect harmony

I agree with Janjua on this one. It’s sensitive to deal with people belonging to different sects.

Re: Inter-sect harmony

I didn’t have any idea that scholar like Dr Israr Ahmed would give explanation in such words. I haven’t listen to ‘Bayan ul Quran’ erlier. It was given by a friend recently.

Re: Inter-sect harmony

Its a good idea never to discuss religious topics with people, you never know how sensitive someone is and how much nuts they can get over it. There is no concept of listening to different viewpoints in our religous discourse. It is , as if you listen to some other views…it is in itself considered a transgression.

Re: Inter-sect harmony

look at the history, every violence is caused by hate. I am not justifying the killing of shia people after their hate against sahabas but hate spreading should be circumvented whoever does it, be it shia or Sunni. shia and suni both should apply it in their lives instead complaining against each others.

Re: Inter-sect harmony

My father has taught me one thing about religion and poliitics, and that is, never to discuss these topics.

Because you never know what sits well with someones belief or not. And people do get hurt when you argue over religion. You religion is between you and your Allah. Do not question someone elses religion or beliefs cause they don’t match with yours or even if you have your doubts.

Some of you might think it’s wrong to not talk about these topics but trust me, my life has been so easy because of following this rule. I wouldn’t want to stop following it.

Re: Inter-sect harmony

agree, but under the current circumsatnces how much you try to avoid in indulging in such discussions, one or next incident happening in the society lead you to that discussion. I myself try not to indulge in such discussions, I would rather try to deviate discussion towards weather, some TV program, but its not always easy. Say you have a dharna either by Jamat e Islami or Majlis e Wahdat ul Muslimeen on some killings. People will start with traffic jams and then end with Rasool allah ka deen Vs yazeed ka deen.

Re: Inter-sect harmony

I’ve managed uptil now. I study and I work and all these discussions are a hot topic almost every day. But I stay quiet. I tell myself that I’m not very well taught or well read on these topics so I should stay quiet. Even if I disagree with them, I stay quiet. It’s not difficult to stay quiet or not put in a relligious cd when travelling with passengers of different sects, is it?

Re: Inter-sect harmony

yes its not difficult to stop from playing a CD. I was not expecting that such a statement would be given by scholar like Dr Israr. If I had known this, I would have not listened to CD at all.

Keeping quiet is the best policy and do follow that myself but you can’t stop others to discuss these topics. You can just try to deviate the discussion, which is successful sometimes and sometimes not.

Re: Inter-sect harmony

If some one discusses some thing that is my aqeedah why i should get offended at first place. Whts good in hiding what i do?

I never feel offended if some one questions my aqeedah, if i feel ashamed i should not practice it in first place.
