Insulin resistance & weight loss

So, the dreaded insulin resistance has bit me in the behind - I got a few books on GI index as the only way to control the belly fat is to go on a low-fat/low-carb diet. Metformin hasn’t worked for me at all - I took it for 3 mnths and none of my symptoms got any better even with 1.5-2 hr workouts 4-5 times a week and healthy eating.
I didnt have any issues until 2009 when I started on a different form of birth control prescribed by the gynea to prevent another ectopic.
Anyone have any meal-plans they have followed to lose the belly fat & weight? Any other totka’s that have worked for the insulin resistance?

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

Some good stuff in the comments of this piece:

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

I said there is some good stuff in the COMMENTS. Some of the commenter's discuss their diets and where they came from.

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

well has anyone tried anything related to controlling carbs using the GI index and been successful. Just the whole idea of substitutions has me going "no wayyyy".

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

mysti, please do read the comments in that piece, some people detail their diets and what they are following.

from what i have read, low to zero carbs is the way to go. fat (depending on what kind) and protein are okay. you will get more info from those comments and the links in them.

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

yes i read through a couple of them will sit down later and read through them again and take notes.

has anyone tried homeopathy for insulin resistance?

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

Would love to know, I haven't been diagnosed but all symptoms are there

My stomach has been flatter since I cut out bread, potatoes and rice and all things white..

I have a teeny weeny bit of rice and potatoes rather than a plateful that I used to have :p

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

I have read up a lot about IF , intermittent fasting - something similar to Ramadan Fasting, that is meant to help control Insulin levels

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

what have u been doing confi? Like what does ur diet comprise of?

Im in serious trouble.. I look 6 mnths preggo and nothing fits anymore which is embarassing. I didnt realize how severe this was until I started reading up on it -

I was on metformin but it didnt help much so I stopped taking it. Im thinking I should start back on it but I need a huge re-vamp in the way I eat. Any help would be appreciated!!

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

mysti, my sister is the same and we suspect as yet undiagnosed PCOS. she’s been on an very low carb diet for the last 6 weeks (spurred on by the comments in the piece!!) or so and the fat is disappearing fast.

if you can be bothered to sift through them, there are lots of comments from type II diabetics who are off metformin by following different diets.

I know lots of desi type II diabetics (including my dad) but they are all on medication and it’s not about to change because they don’t have the self discipline to stick to such diets.

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

Agree with stoppit.. I have been diagnosed with PCOS and causes you to have a stomach like a pregnant woman in her 6th month

I have somehow and gratefully stopped eating rice, white stuff.. Pastries, cakes etc and it has really reduced the bloating

My only baddie is potatoes but then I have half of a potato with greens rather than a plateful of potatoes

I haven't touched bread (wholegrain or white) in weeks as I always felt bloated after that

Focus on lots of veg and meat and as little carbs as you can possibly manage..

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

Yeah - Ive started reading up on the GI index. Bought the GI index 2011 and GI diet books. Seems to have worked for many people over the years. Lets see how it goes!!

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

I really cant give advixe specificallym for the medical issue u are going through.... But my mom was asked by her dr to cut out all starchy foods like rice, bread, potatoes.... She has been doing it for a month and the woman has lost stomach fat a whole lot! Otherwise shelooked like she was pegnant too.... Give it a try maybe?

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

haan but u need to have a good back-up to substitute the missing 'bad-carbs' for - like on the GI diet u can have basmati rice but you have to measure out a cooked 1/2 cup for it to be considered a low GI food - my problem is the sugar spike in blood which then leads to adding fat cells which im 110% sure I need no more of.

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

:/Cant ure gp refer u to a dietician? Maybe they can help u plan a diet that suits ure needs?

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

Mysti

There is G index and G Load ---

So even if the GI content of the food is low if you eat too many portions it will still cause a spike in your sugar levels so if I were you just look at all the High GI items and rice and potato are there and just cut them out 5 days a week from your diet and see how it goes

Re: Insulin resistance & weight loss

I agree with Confucius. It is my understanding that you need to cut out carbs and sugars almost completely. So even fruits in moderation but fresh vegetables (especially green ones) are fine.

Obviously it is difficult. My sister eats no more than 2 pieces wholemeal bread and 1/2 wholemeal roti in a day. So it's not only low GI stuff but the absolute minimum.

White spaghetti is low GI but that's one of the things that has to go in a low carb diet. Obviously, you want to do something sustainable. But perhaps try minimal carbs for two weeks and see, I'm sure you will start to see a difference. If you do, then it is very suggestive that cabrs are a problem for you so you can start planning a long term diet accordingly.
