A friend of mine is pregnant and the only thing she eats day after day sometimes even twice a day is those instant noodle soup bowls. They’re high in sodium (over 1000 gms) and contain MSG. I’ve been trying to tell her that its no good for the baby, but she said she wont stop eating them as its the only thing she really likes and craves right now, unless and until she’s given good reason to stop i.e. examples of what could go wrong with the baby. Kidney problems is certainly one problem no, both for her and the baby? Any others?

Well the very fact that she isn't getting a balanced meal should be reason enough for her to stop. She needs carbs and protein and fruits and veggies and omega fats and grain and fiber... so by eating only one type of food that is high in sodium and carbs, with hardly any nuritional benefit is not good. It probably satisfies her craving but ask her to eat other things in addition to that.

Never confront a pregnant woman with a craving lol!! Sure, too much salt isnt great for a pregnant woman but if it has a negative impact, it will show in her ankles. They will blow up like watermelons, her doc will notice and will put her on a restricted sodium diet. I'm sure she eats more than just instant soups yeah? The suggestion to add veggies is a good one...
When I was preg and had my chocolate craving, it was very specific...I needed either friendly's "forbidden chocoalate" ice cream with choc sauce and whipped cream OR the bakery's "tuxedo cake" - dark choc with white cream filling. There was one time that the store had neither one and I was so very angry that I went looking for the store manager lol.

lol!! Actually, I was so angry that I had murder on my mind when I went stalking across the store to the manager's desk! Halfway there, I told myself to get a GRIP. Then I grumbled my way to the candy aisle and got a huge "special dark" candy bar.
