Insomnia

I think quite a few threads have been posted on the topic. Insomnia, or sleep disturbance, is quite common and quite difficult to treat. Just wanted to add that if you suffer from insomnia, kindly seek treatment from your local psychiatrist. Psychiatrists are trained to treat this disorder more so than you regular primary care physician. Self-medication usally only worsens the disorder.

Re: Insomnia

^Psychiatry is quackery.
SSRIs/Benzos are poisons that make people living zombies.

...and you got your nick right.

Re: Insomnia

There could be many reasons for insomnia including psychological, physical, body-chemistry which in turn might be a change due to psychological changes (stress/trauma etc.) Histamine plays an important part in your sleep, if it is tooo low you will have trouble sleeping.

Re: Insomnia

That is incorrect. I think media has already done justice to prove Tom Cruise wrong.

Re: Insomnia

What I said is from personal experience and not because it seems fashionable to take Tom Cruise's position on the subject.

Unfortunately in America, even kids are given SSRIs and Benzos for what really would be considered "personality quirks".
Shrinks and Pharma companies invent diseases out of personality abnormalities :

-Attention Deficit Disorder
-Avoidance Disorder
-Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
-Generalized Anxiety Disorder
-Panic Disorder
-Social Anxiety Disorder

A "SHY" person in India would be considered to be suffering from "SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER" in the United States and be put on medication.

Its easy to see why Pharma companies would push psychiatric drugs because it is their CASH COWS. Once a person has been on these drugs for a reasonable period of time, it is difficult to get off them because of the withdrawal side-effects. So most of the "patients" are on them for life.

And what do Psychiatrists really do.....they just listen to your story with a blank face and then prescribe medications by trial-and-error. First Zoloft, if that doesn't work..let's put you on Prosac, that's not working...let's try Luvox....not working ..no problem...lets try Lexapro...Is this what you call medical science.

The whole field of Psychiatry is nothing but a load of CRAP.

Anybody who is extremely stressed, anxious, has trouble sleeping etc should visit a Psychologist (not a Psychiatrist), undergo behavioral therapy etc....medications should be the last resort.

Psychiatric medications have never "CURED" anybody.

He hits the needle on the head.

Re: Insomnia

I completely agree with you... its all about milking money out of your wallet.

Re: Insomnia

a long vacation can "cure" stress and problems associated with it (including some insomnia) more efficiently

westerners think they can BUY time, but it's false
to cure desease :
time , rest, sleep, and also exercice AND meditation to reach harmony of your body and soul, ARE needed
instaead of medications, as westerners don't want to take time, they PAY for chemicals which pretend to give benefits of time
(like some drugs for depression, while only time and thinking heals wounds)

but the side efffect is that once on drugs, you can NEVER stop

so think before buying time

Re: Insomnia

I certainly did not imply that.

Well, I assume that by personality you are referring to a way that a person behaves. If a person’s behavior causes significant distress to the individual to the extent that they are unable to function in daily life, then that is a disorder. And, medications have provided some help with this regard, especially for disorders such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Generlaized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, etc. Psycho-bable (aka psychotherapy) also significantly helps with personality disorders.

Well, they can always be slowly taken off the medication without the withdrawal side-effects. They stay on them for life because they need to. It’s like diabetes or high blood pressure–people usually stay on the medication for life.

Listening to “story” is getting the information. All doctors do that and than ask relevant questions to establish a diagnosis. And research has shown that if medication does not provide relief, an individual may still respond to another medication. Similarly in medicine, if one medicine does not treat a certain bug, a different one does.

Well, treatment certainly starts with the most benign course and then treated more aggressively as needed. If behavioral therapy and other such treatment benefit the individual than medication is usually not tried (medications are only used when a disorder is assessed to be significant).

Just as high blood pressure and diabetes are never “cured” but treated, psychiatric illness is also controlled with medication and people do have to stay on them for life. Some acute illnesses and some minor disorders are sometimes treated with short-term treatment. Psychiatric medications can have side-effects; however, they have helped numerous people improve their quality of lives. Just ask people with schizophrenia or post-traumatic-stress disorder who were unable to even go outside their homes due to their illness, how much better they feel after having a control of their symptoms and being able to function in their daily life. Psychiatry makes a difference in people’s life.

Re: Insomnia

Well, this gentleman is a psychologist and not a psychiatrist. His knowledge is limited; his arguments are very concrete and very easy to be proven false. There should be a face-to-face debate between him and a psychiatrist.

Re: Insomnia

The point about needing rest, sleep, exercise, meditation…is certainly valid. As for the remainder, you can certainly read the previous posts.
