As our nation waits with sardonic patience for the next fiasco and final collapse of nerve which will hopefully put an end to whole Pakistani Emergency/Martial law painful chapter , there is a question hovering my mind.
I was just wondering , in a complex society like our Pakistani society , how much power can we give to people ?

Could you clarify the question a bit? Do you think that the general populace in Pakistan is not capable of using their vote responsibly, or that they are not ready for democracy of the sort that we have here?
We were discussing this the other night, and my husband said that any actual democracy in Pakistan would not last for long, because of the inherent social inequalities and feudal structure. I would argue that even in the US we began with a similar structure, and have been constantly correcting it through our history. It is due for more corrections, i.e. doing away with the electoral college. I can't see major changes happening without revisiting the role of the military and land reforms, but it will happen over time. My husband and his friends mentioned that no matter how bad things seem now, they pale in comparison to some of the violence of the 80's that he grew up with, the war with Bangladesh, and the deaths of Bhutto and Zia. We talk about how bad the situation is now, but can you imagine what it was like when your parents were younger?
