What is the ruling on a fasting person using an inhaler for breathing problems? I’ve had a very difficult time today as I usually have breathing issues when it’s really humid and today it was exceptionally humid here! I’ve heard both that it’s permissible and that it isn’t permissible. ![]()
I have had the same issue in the past. The ruling I got was that its okay & it doesn't break your fast. Indeed I remember opening a similar thread here as well about the same subject.
Re: Inhalers
i believe you can have inhalers...it's tasteless and it doesn't go to your stomach...as long as you need it, it should be okay.
^ if that were the case, ciggs would be allowed too
Inhalers aren’t tasteless, and even tho they’re not ‘feeding’ us in anyway, it is a foreign substabce that you’re putting into your body.
:hinna: I had been told the above, and so can’t use my inhaler when I need to. If it gets really bad, I have had to break my fast and ask for forgiveness cuz I really can’t risk having an attack.
But, some people do say they are “ok” but you should try not to use it. To each their own.
Re: Inhalers
^cigs are not necessary… an inhaler is
Idk the islamic perspective on it though. Maybe you should post in the religion forum to get more responses

cigs are NOT medical necessities. having said that, if you are NOT feeling well, you may skip roza and fast on another day.
Re: Inhalers
Might as well stop breathing because air is also a foreign substance.
I don’t see any reason why inhalers should be forbidden.
Besides, going in to such tiny, minor little issues to perfect your fast, I think, is just unnecessary. Reminds me of the story of Moses where he asked a group of people to sacrifice a cow and the people kept asking about the exact details of the cow to the point where the description got so complex that they literally had to pay a giant heap of gold to get that rare cow. Moral of the story, keep it simple or else you’ll find yourself in a difficult and perplexing dilemma.
Re: Inhalers
I have suffered from severe asthma ever since I was a kid. And being a kid many people guided me wrong and told me to take them during my roza which is very wrong. Inhaler isn't just air. It has medicine in it. If you pump it on the back of your hand you'll feel the misty liquid that is being pumped into you and goes down your throat. I have now fallen in a habit of taking my inhaler at Sehri everyday, regardless of my condition at that day. Also, whenever I feel an attack coming I go outdoors and breath in the fresh air. Don't be taking long breaths as that usually makes my condition worse because I am not intaking air for a few seconds. Just sit and breathe calmly, it really really helps.
Also, if the condition gets horribly worse, which has happened with me in the past, I end up taking my inhaler but I don't eat anything. I know its wrong and my fast doesn't hold any longer but I just can't start eating araamse. I always wait for Iftar. Just a peace of mind that maybe, maybe my fast still holds and Allah will accept it.

Smelling and inhaling perfume and bakhour intentionally is prohibited during roza...wouldn't the same apply to inhalers?
Re: Inhalers
I would just say, to stay on the safe side, everyone should try to avoid inhalers during their fast. Its a debate and we can never be sure. Even if it takes a bit of himmat and we have to endure some pain, its something we are doing for Allah SWT and he will grant ajarr to everyone struggling for Him. However, do take medicines even if you have to take some precautionery ones during Ramadan.

No, its not prohibited (scents and perfume are totally permissible during fasting). And even if they were prohibited, it wouldn't apply to inhalers because inhalers are not used to apply a pleasant smell to the body. That logic is akin to prohibiting alcohol (ethanol) to treat wounds topically because it is prohibited to consume it orally - alcohol is forbidden for its psychoactive effects and topical use does not induce that effect. Same thing with inhalers; they aren't used for fragrance. Exercise reason & logic and such petty issues shouldn't arise. Everything in Islam is given a valid reason, and precisely that - reasoning, contemplation, etc - is the umbilical integral of Islamic faith.
