Ingredient: Cumin seeds

How do you use this ingredient in your day to day cooking? or household matters?

Any particular health benefits?

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

I have heard my mother say it on a number of occasions that Cumin seed is really healthy, its got high iron content and minerals and so got advised to make it a common use in my cooking.

I use it in almost all the food I cook . In baking , I use it to make zeera cookies , they taste awesome.

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

I love zeera!! It tops as one of my fav spices so it goes into basically anything desi that I make.

Perhaps this is for another thread, but what is shah (kala) zeera used for? I’ve only seen it used in pulao.

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

I think Shah zeera is the roasted black cumin , its aroma is much more higher then the usual zeera ..

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

I love zeera rice, always use them for tarka in kuri and daal, add them in achari keema and achari chicken

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

Zeera smells lovely - but I don’t overuse it. I recently found out you can use it in the pakoras made for karri  Other than that I use it in certain dishes like karahi chicken, or aloo green beans and tomato.

I use zeera powder a lot more I think. But sabat zeera smells the best

p.s. don’t like zeera cookies - reminds me of Pakistani bakeries - they were rubbish when I went in '06. Whatever happened to a good old chocolate cake?!

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

I LOVE cumin seeds. And I go overboard with them when I cook. I put them in almost everything. Try adding cumin seeds in omelette and you’re gonna thank me for life.

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

I use them in aloo ki bhujiya as well and little bit in my hot chaat

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

oh Hadeel , you are so right. Zeera absolutely tastes heavenly in Omelette.

I think Zeera seeds have a really good combination with corriander seeds . Crush them both together and oh the aroma

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

Though I must admit , I have never liked cumin seeds ka tarka. I dont know , why it starts tasting bitter :frowning:

Ingredient: Cumin seeds

Zeera in bhagaar/tarka is a must in Hyderabadi cooking…can’t imagine any bhagaar without it!

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

I just remembered , sprinkle lots of cumin in the paratha and then make a lightly salted paratha… it makes an awesome snack..

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

my mom used to make zeera raita. basically yogurt with zeera, ate it with pulao parathas biryani etc.

I love zeera, but unfortunately my husband hates any whole spices in his food…so i rarely use the whole forms.

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

me no like strong cumin flavor. its great when it goes with coriander but by itself its nasty..

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

Everyone knows it is jeera.

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

Sara, my mom used to give us Zeera raita with rice as well .. I think it goes really well in that combo..

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

Just remembered my speciality that I havnt made in ages but I love it , zeera rice ..

Sprinkle about three tablespoons of zeera lightly crushed in oil , until they crackle. Then add in chopped green chillies, loads of fresh corriander , salt and add water enough for the rice to boil in. add Rice. When done, sprinkle a bit of food color , you do you in biryani .

Dum it. Then mix it and enjoy with daal . .awesome taste

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

also add in any raita, pasta, dhai bhaly, when I was in pak I used to buy tht nestle zeera raita, it tastes awsum

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

When I have a tummy ache, I chew cumin. It usually helps.

Re: Ingredient: Cumin seeds

oh. one thing that I remembered…since my husband hates whole spices, what I would do was bhoon the zeera and coriander seeds (separately) and then put them in the grinder. Once I grinded the zeera without bhooning it, and it had a very very different smell (more..minty than the typical zeera smell we’re used to).
