Infrastructure & Development Projects: Pakistan

Cost of the project is $13 billion with capacity of 4500MW. We have wasted 40 years in Kala Bagh Dam debate as Tarbela Dam completed in 1974. We need Hydel power to balance our energy mix and an irrigation reservoir for agro based economy of Pakistan. Tarbela Extension 4 ( 1400MW) will be ready by Dec 2017 and Tarbela Extension 5 (1400MW) will be in national grid by April 2018 also.

Diamer-Bhasha dam construction to start next year

http://cache.pakistantoday.com.pk/cic-invited-to-invest-in-diamer-bhasha-dam-1354304594-2726.jpg

The construction work of Diamer-Bhasha Dam, one of the largest energy projects in the country, will start next year, government sources said on Monday.

The land acquisition process for the project has been finalised with a cost of Rs 104 billion, according to official sources in the Ministry of Planning, Development and Reforms.

The project is likely to be part of the second phase of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and would generate 4,500 MW of electricity besides serving as a huge water reservoir for the country.

“The country is expected to face acute shortage of water in the next decade, and so, in order to prevent food shortage, this project will be developed at any cost”, Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal said in a recently held meeting.

He said that the government assigns the highest priority to Diamer-Bhasha Dam because a serious water crisis is looming in next five to ten years which may be a lot worse than the current electricity crisis.

The foundation stone of Diamer-Bhasha dam, a gravity dam on the River Indus in Gilgit-Baltistan, was laid on October 18, 2011.
Upon completion, Diamer-Bhasha dam would be the highest roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam in the world.

The dam’s site is situated near a place called “Bhasha” in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer District, hence the name.
Diamer-Bhasha Dam would produce 4,500 MW of electricity through environmentally clean hydropower generation; store an extra 8,500,000 acre feet (10.5 km3) of water for the country that would be used for irrigation and drinking; extend the life of Tarbela Dam located downstream by 35 years and control flood damage caused by the River Indus downstream during high floods.

It will have a height of 272 meters spillway with fourteen gates each measuring 11.5 m x 16.24 m.

The gross capacity of the reservoir will be 8,100,000 acre feet (10.0 km3), with a live storage of 6,400,000 acre feet (7.9 km3).

Two underground power houses are being proposed, one on each side of the main dam having six turbines on each side with total installed capacity of 4,500 MW.

In January 2006, the government announced the decision to construct five multi-purpose storage dams in the country during the next 10-12 years.

According to the plan, the Diamer-Bhasha dam project was proposed in the first phase.

In November 2008, the Executive Committee of National Economic Council formally approved the project.

Council of Common Interests Pakistan, a constitutional body representing the provinces, also approved the construction of the dam.

The cost of the Diamer-Bhasha dam was estimated at $12.6 billion.
An amount of Rs 27.824 billion is required for the acquisition of land and resettlement of the people to be affected in the wake of the construction of the dam.

Under the proposed project, Rs 10.76 billion will be spent for the acquisition of barren land, trees and nurseries; Rs 1.638 billion will be utilised for properties and infrastructure; Rs 8.8 billion for establishment of nine model villages; Rs 62.119 million for pay and allowances for administrative arrangements and Rs.17.7 million for contingent administrative expenses.

Detailed drawings of the dam were completed by March 2008.

The project is located on Indus River, about 315 km upstream of Tarbela Dam, 165 km downstream of Gilgit and 40 km downstream of Chilas.

In a bid to tap existing hydel generation potential in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), the federal government is vigorously pursuing mega projects to construct 4,500 MW Diamer-Bhasha and 5,400 MW Dasu dams for meeting growing energy and water demands in the country.

“Hundred per cent land acquisition process for Diamer-Bhasha dam will be completed in the current month,” official sources in the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) told APP.

Under the project, they said, a total 37,419 acres land would be acquired, out of which 19,062 acres was land belongs to the government and 18,357 acres of land is private. “As many as 7,990 acres private land has already been acquired in Gilgit-Baltistan,” they added.

The sources informed that 17,214 acres government land had already been transferred by the GB government to the project. They said an amount of Rs 262 million had been released to the deputy commissioner Kohistan to acquire 162 acres of land for the Contractor’s Camp in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Rs 63 million for acquisition of land for constructing Karakorum Highway (KKH) bypass.

Under pre-construction and re-settlement activities, office building at Chilas had already been constructed, they said. During construction of the main dam, the sources said, the existing KKH would be used for carrying out construction activities while the bypass from Shatial to Thor Nullah would be utilised for uninterrupted traffic flow.

Some Rs 900 million had been transferred to National Highway Authority (NHA) for building the bypass, they added.

According to the PC 1 of the Diamer-Bhahsha Dam Project (DBDP), the project would cost Rs 894.257 billion with Rs 312.943 billion foreign exchange component, the sources said. The dam is being built on the Indus River 315 km upstream of Tarbela Dam site, about 180 km below the town of Gilgit and about 40 km downstream of Chilas. Commenting on the progress of Dasu Dam, the sources said an amount of Rs 732 million had been transferred to DC Upper Kohistan in respect of payments to land affected people of the area.

They said that five contracts had also been awarded for construction of right bank access road (Dasu-RAR-01), relocation of Karakorum Highway (Dasu-KKH-01), setting up of 132 KV transmission line from Dubair to Dasu (Dasu-TL-01), establishing project colony and infrastructure (Dasu-PCI-01R), resettlement of village Chuchang and construction of Open Air Shatial Museum (Dasu-RV).

Regarding financing of the Dasu project (Phase 1), the sources said that the World Bank would finance the Stage-I of Dasu Hydropower Project with an IDA (international development association) credit of $ 588.4 million and an IDA PCG (partial credit guarantees) of $ 460 million.

A consortium of eight local banks had also agreed to provide Rs 144 billion for the main civil works, they said. Furthermore, they said, international banks had also submitted their indicative terms sheet for $ 700-1,000 million against World Bank PCG and the government guarantees for the project.

“These projects will not only generate cheap hydel electricity but also usher in a new era of development and progress in the country particularly KPK,” they remarked.

Re: Infrastructure & Development Projects: Pakistan

Karachi's development is more than shown here. The city looks pretty different now and there is construction going on everywhere there.

Re: Infrastructure & Development Projects: Pakistan

Karachi is a complete mess except few areas of Clifton or DHA which not make even 10% of KHI. Its time for City of Light to be renamed to City of Garbage & Gutters. No Infrastructure & Transportation System in whole City, jam packed roads, Garbage everywhere literally EVERYWHERE ! All major roads of Lahore get washed from 2:00am to 4:00am by Turkish Al-Bayrak Cleaner Trucks I have myself seen them at 1:30am few months back. Come to Lahore and you would surely say that Lahore is like Paris in front of Karachi !

**Uber Launching within Days In Pak, Lahore to get first service **

Uber — the on-demand taxi service which has fast become a household name across the globe — is launching in Pakistan within days, we have heard.

Based on early information Uber operations will start from Lahore initially and will expand soon to other cities.

However, Uber will face competition from the likes of Careem, who have been aggressively expanding to grab as much market share as they can, and A-Taxi, who are backed by Turkish investors and the Government of Punjab.

Re: Infrastructure & Development Projects: Pakistan

Meanwhile no clean water, loadshedding, high prices, corruption, poor medical facilities. Who needs all this when we have flyovers. Talk about getting your priorities wrong.

Re: Infrastructure & Development Projects: Pakistan

ehsan bhai only thing that really lacks is inadequate medical facilities due to population explosion and rush towards major cities due to badly managed DHQs/THQs. Punjab Saaf Pani Project is already working in major cities with filtration plants and it will be extended to almost whole Punjab in next 3 years. Load shedding will be almost vanished by March 2018 as Projects are in execution mode. Inflation as per FBS stats is lowest in 15 years these days. Corruption in Punjab Govt is least as compared to any other province/AJK/GB
