AN award ceremony “Brilliance in Pakistan 2007” was held on Thursday in honour of the Pakistani students who achieved the best results in the world in O and A levels under the UK examination boards including Edexcel and Cambridge.

A total of 26 students have topped in the world from June and November 2007 examinations for various Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and Edexcel, University of London syllabuses. As many as 120 high achieving students who topped in the City, Pakistan and in the world, were presented awards in the ceremony.

Regional Manager, South Asia, University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), William Bickerdike, Global Relationship Manager of Edexcel David Davies, Director Examination Services Pakistan of the British Council John Gildea and Deputy Director British Council in Pakistan Mark Stephens were present on the occasion while Vice Chancellor of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Dr Syed Zahoor Hassan was the chief guest. Award winning students and their proud parents attended the ceremony.

Those who topped in the world under the Edexcel London Examinations include Syed M Ali Hassan O Level Mathematics of International School of Choueifat, Muhammad Ali O Level Mathematics Bloomfield Hall Lahore, Fatima Haider Khagga O Level Urdu International School of Choueifat, Maryam Shahbaz O Level Pakistan Studies Bloomfield Hall Lahore, Buria Naeem O Level Pakistan Studies of the Salamat Girls ICAS and Shi Qin Xiong O Level Chinese of the International School of Choueifat.

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) also presented awards to the toppers of ACCA and CAT.

Earlier, Deputy Director British Council in Pakistan Mark Stephens presented the welcome address and congratulated the toppers on their achievements.

Speaking on the occasion, William Bickerdike said reasons behind the high level of performance by the Pakistani students was immense support from teachers and parents to the students. He said the training option for teachers was also a contributing factor to the performance of the students. Addressing the students, he said “Talent you have in abundance”. He further said if results were compared with students of Karachi, there were more toppers in Karachi than Lahore. David Davies also congratulated the high achievers saying “Today is your day”.

In his address, Dr Syed Zahoor Hassan, congratulating the students, urged them to play their role in the development of the country and the world. “Make best of the world”, he added. He also advised the students to broaden their set of ambitions.
