Industrial blackout: Millions of jobs at stake, say textile millers

It seems the government is hell bent on destroying the textile sector of Punjab.

**LAHORE: ****A surprise step taken by the Ministry of Water and Power to stop electricity supply to all textile units of Punjab has sparked anger and frustration among investors of the textile industry.

**

The apex body of textile millers – the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association – has heavily criticised the government and warned that the industry will be forced to start sacking workers from Friday, if gas and electricity supply was not restored by Thursday.

**“If the government thinks that by diverting away industrial load to domestic feeders, it will gain a high number of voters, it is only misguided by its advisers,” remarked APTMA group leader Gohar Ijaz, after holding an emergency meeting with stakeholders of the Punjab textile industry.
**

**The government would not be able to win votes at the cost of industry, he said. “What will happen when 10 million workers in Punjab are dismissed from their jobs, we don’t have any other choice as we cannot pay salaries with total shutdown.”
**

On Saturday, the government stopped electricity supply to Punjab’s textile industry for a month to facilitate residential consumers and soothe growing anger over power cuts, only a few months ahead of elections.

Interestingly, on the same day, Adviser to Prime Minister on Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain announced that textile mills of the province would be provided gas for 36 hours in a week. However, APTMA insisted that gas was still absent and they were totally lost and wondering what to do.

**Quantifying expected loss of exports from power outages, APTMA claimed a week’s closure would cause a loss of $300 million to the mills, and if it electricity supply remained suspended for a month the loss would swell to $1 billion.
**

The millers also claim that they have already lost millions of dollars worth of exports during a strike by goods transporters earlier this month as orders could not be delivered to European countries on the eve of Christmas.

“This (energy outages) is only happening in Punjab and no other province is facing such a crisis, we always try to solve issues faced by the government because we want to be part of solution not a problem,” said Shahzad Ali Khan, Chairman of APTMA Punjab.

**He said the industry didn’t know who was giving such advice to the government, but one thing was clear that such steps were destroying the most precious industry of the country.
**

However, he announced that the government had assured them that it would come up with some solution by December 28 and they were only waiting for that. “We are in negotiations with a couple of committees but do not see any light at the end of the tunnel.”

They provided a job to the son-in-law of the Prime Minister who hails from Punjab. Now don't complain the government doesn't care about unemployment, you thankless people!

Re: Industrial blackout: Millions of jobs at stake, say textile millers

The government has a complete lack of common sense, apart from lack of apathy for the public at large. I wonder why they dont suspend CNG indefinitely, or even ban it completely? At least people have an alternate to CNG in the form of petrol, even though it is expensive. At least people wont be left stranded. Whereas by suspending industrial gas, they are forcing hundreds and thousands of workers out of work. This really wreaks of bias and criminal apathy.

Re: Industrial blackout: Millions of jobs at stake, say textile millers

couple of years ago most of the apparel at Walmart and other stores carried "made in Pakistan" clothes, now i have noticed most of the clothes and fabrics carry the "Made in Bangladesh" or even "Made in Vietnam" tags - So the effects are already showing and it will take some serious action to turn this around.

But abhi tu "Election lagay paRay hain - Jamhooriat mustehkam ho rahi hay etc etc etc" - jab iss BC leadership ko time millay ga tu economy waghaira bhi daikh lain gay

Re: Industrial blackout: Millions of jobs at stake, say textile millers

Strange how no one can see the obvious. This along with other steps is being done by the government to create havoc and unrest in the country, ergo, reason for postponing the elections and continuing to suck the blood out of this already bloodied country.

Re: Industrial blackout: Millions of jobs at stake, say textile millers

Textile industry in Punjab? what are you talking about? There is no such thing as far as power is concerned.

Re: Industrial blackout: Millions of jobs at stake, say textile millers

How come dirty dirtiyest is not mentioned when dirty dirty most dirtyest is being done in Punjab textile mills? If he can’t solve the crisis, then why doesn’t he has “fear of god” and donate his chanda bhatta money to the textile owners so they can run the mills on generators?

CNG stations these days in Punjab are being closed for 6 days. I dont know why bother opening them for a day? It would be better to close them indefinitely to relieve the masses of the mental torture and wastage of fuel (while waiting in the long queue for their turn) and time.

Anwar Pasha is smiling somewhere. content that the killers of bhuttos, the punjabis are paying for what they did to the 'shaheeds'

Re: Industrial blackout: Millions of jobs at stake, say textile millers

He wont be smiling after seeing the next election results though. :( In spite of the average performance of PMLN many people would vote for them to ensure that their votes to Pti don't result in win for PPP. For any party to win the premiership its important to win Punjab.

Re: Industrial blackout: Millions of jobs at stake, say textile millers

Showbaz Sharif is running parallel government in Punjab, why he is inactive there? His only responsibility to support Punjabi Taliban who are on killing spree in KP, Baluchistan and Sindh? Where are his guts to tackle this problem? Isn't he equally responsible?

Re: Industrial blackout: Millions of jobs at stake, say textile millers

He is responsible for his province, but there are some things under the jurisdiction of federal government and some under the provincial. I do consider his performance in this tenure as pretty average as well.
