India's strategy against Mendis?

Considering the mesmerizing effect this guy has had on the Indian batsmen…Im trying to figure what India’s approach should be to counter this mysterious bowler?

Sehwag is the only Indian batsman to have any sort of success against him and he read him off of the pitch which I dont think would work for any of the other Indian batsmen.

Clearly watching any amount of videos of his bowling isnt doing any good either…

This guy is a HUGE problem for India and definitely needs some plan.

So what do the experts at Gupshup have to say about possible strategies for India and the rest of the world for that matter to counter this freak bowler!!!

Re: India's strategy against Mendis?

The best strategy would be to have "no strategy".

I think the Indians have put themselves into some sort of a "mental hole" against Mendis.

Mendis wasn't this successful even against Bangladesh and Pakistan in the Asia Cup one dayers. In the couple of games he played in the IPL, he did not do anything out of the ordinary.

I think the reason Sehwag seems to be the only batsman successful against Mendis is that he does not analyze too much.

Indian batsmen (barring Sehwag) have become the victim of over analysis in my opinion.

Yuvraj should go into the 2nd match with the mindset to tonk Mendis for 6 Sixes in an over. There is no point trying to spend time reading his deliveries in an ODI game and let Mendis build up the pressure.

i guess u r right .......... they just have to stop focusing too much on him ..
i guess dhoni will play important role in showing his team mates ... how to play mendis

Re: India's strategy against Mendis?

yea...sounds about right....im sure the other nations are not gonna have as many issues with him as India seems to be having....

india maybe has created too much hype and hoopla and complicated things too much abt this guy...nehow series is 1-1 now...lets see what comes.....

Re: India's strategy against Mendis?

just don't let the ball pitch

^^ thts ur word ... or word of quaid ?

Re: India's strategy against Mendis?

Well, you can't just try your shot without analyzing his delivery or having any information about which delivery he has bowled out of the stock of so many that he has. I think Dhoni has a point when he said, " The moment **you are able to understand which delivery he has bowled, it is too late to play a big shot". So this **moment seems to come earlier in case of other bowlers (may be because of their grip, style of bowling...etc. which easily help in predicting the bowl they are going to bowl)

If you have a go at him without being able to anticipate the bowl he has bowled, you would simply get out as the bowl might turn out to be "different" than you had anticipated in terms of spin, speed and bounce...etc. That is what Yuvrag might be afraid of before deciding to have a go at him.

We can't compare others with Sehwag, because he is special in a way that he confidently relies on his "instincts" without any fear of getting out. If you want others to play like him, teach them to do the same.

I agree, these are international players, the best of the best who have played all kinds of bowling, need to have individual strategies though and definitely need to analyze the bowling. They know how to adapt. Dhoni is probably right. Not too long ago, Murali was unplayable and used to rip through the batting order, this guy is different, will take time to get used to him.

Re: India's strategy against Mendis?

^ True, today Badrinath made the same mistake I was mentioning, having a go at Mendis on the first ball he faced, without completely reading the ball.

22.5 Mendis to Badrinath, OUT, caught!! Mendis strikes! Badrinath tries to take Mendis on, he charges and tries to hit over the off side, he gets too far away from the ball and throws his bat at it, he connects with the bottom and hits it flat and straight to Vaas at mid-off
