India’s missile defence shield ready

NEW DELHI: India has developed missile defence shield which can be put in place at short notice to protect at least two cities, bringing the country on par with an elite group of few nations.

The shield, developed by DRDO, has been tested successfully and an incoming ballistic missile with the range of up to 2,000 kms can be destroyed. The system is to be upgraded to the range of 5,000 kms by 2016.

“The Ballistic Missile Defence shield is now mature… We are ready to put phase one in place and it can be put in very short time,” DRDO chief VK Saraswat told PTI in an interview.

He said the shield, as part of phase one of the programme, can be put in place at two places in the country, where the infrastructure is available. However, the two places have not yet been identified and the selection will be made at the political level.

The DRDO used variants of Prithvi missiles as simulated targets and successfully intercepted missiles in test-firings.

“We have carried out six successful launches and demonstrated the capability for 2,000 km targets… We have demonstrated it in two layers that is endo-atmospheric (inside the Earth’s atmosphere) and exo-atmospheric (outside the Earth’s atmosphere),” Saraswat said.

He said all the elements such as long-range radars and tracking devices, real-time datalink and mission control system required for the missile system have been “realised” successfully.

Under the phase two of the project, the premier defence research agency would upgrade the system to handle ballistic missiles with range of 5,000 km. This phase is expected to be ready by 2016.

From the US to Nato nations, missile defence shields have been proving faulty white elephants. India is a huge country and how much money it will have to set aside for such senseless defence armoury is anybody’s guess. With over 1 billion population, the country needs spending focus on poverty alleviation and not on such shields that can always be manipulated by the enemy.

So they can save 2 cities, but what if three are attacked at the same time?

my thoughts on this defence shield

i don't think india is over spending on defence...

if you look at overall picture india spends around 2-3 percent of its budget on defence ,there is huge amount of money is allocated on poverty/education and other issues does this money reaches common people that's another issue...

lot of corruption takes place from common governement employee to minister level..

that doesn't mean india should stop spending on other sectors unless it's overspent and directly affecting budget on other issues like ,infact last year india didn't use it full budget for defence...

About nuclear weapons,it can only bring utter choas we know what atomic bomb did in hiroshima/nagasaki todays weapons are much more advance then what has been used in hiroshima,affects can be deadly

could destroy entire earth's eco system,but at the rate which pakistan is mass producing nuclear weapons probably fastest in world, amount of yield in those wepons is another issue..

that doesn't mean india should also mass produce this weapons

thats why india needs this defence shield more then attacking missiles to safe gaurds its developing cities,hope someday everyone can destroy their nuclear arsenal

Chankya said in neetishasta, if your economical strength doesn’t translate into military strength then your position is always vulnerable and if your military strength overshoots your economic strength the state falls in chaos, the best way is to develop both and keeping the balance:)

In rural school government is even giving books and school dresses with adequate teachers in rural punjab. our pm is from such rural school hence Right to education or grants to primary are still the focus of Indian Human development plan though due to huge size of this nation coverage is little less:), but at least in last ten years I have seen good development in rural education and change of attitude towards development in rural education despite space and missile programmes:k:

In terms of % of GDP how much does India, Pak ,China and USA spend on their defense.

Indeed. we also eliminated polio, in 2011 India didn't had any case of polio this was the second success after small pox in 70s. Though total healthcare system needs complete overhaul and better participation from the society:)

We are just talking about small pockets where education is able to get a foothold. Also there is this perennial problem if these shields are supposed to what they are supposed to do. There can and should never be a real world scenario to test this…

Missile defence is mainly hype the PLA in a hypothetical war situation could launch 100 ballistic missiles and what would this defence system do? it would be overloaded and fail in its criteria.

pretty much useless, can be easily dodged and has no real benefit when "enemies" are sooooo close that they dont even need a ballistic missile to hit india.
