Pakistani rice being sold with Indian label

By Mubarak Zeb Khan

ISLAMABAD, Jan 31: As Pakistan failed to register super basmati locally, Indian expatriates based in Dubai and London are selling Pakistani origin basmati in consumer packs branded as of Indian origin at much higher prices, Dawn has learnt.

Even Indian Pussa — a non-basmati variety in the European Union (EU) market, is fetching higher price than Pakistani basmati. This all happened due to Pakistan’s failure to timely contest Indian registration of super basmati for export nine months ago.

Indian Pussa (duplicate basmati)is sold at a price ranging between $800 to $850 per ton, real basmati at $950 to $1,000 per ton in the EU market. The Pakistani original super basmati was selling in the range of $500 to $550 per ton with a risk of cancellation of containers if it did not meat the EU standards — DNA testing requirement.

A leading exporter of basmati rice requested not to be named told Dawn that the Pakistani basmati was not only facing the disadvantage of low price but it was also marketed in huge quantity in the consumer packs with an Indian origin label.

He said since India was short of basmati rice, including Pussa variety, its exporters approached the Indian expatriates based in London and Dubai to meet the demand of their buyers. “Our price is rising locally but what will happen, Dubai and London based millers would market Pakistani variety as of Indian origin because they have a strong lobby in EU, the exporter warned.

Europe had already bought from India huge quantity of duplicate basmati Pussa) approved by the EU, while Pakistani delegation went to Brussels in 2004-05 and got approved Pk-375, the variety which has ceased growing since a long time.

“We are still unable to register super basmati with EU, while Europeans are buying our brown basmati rice because of shortage in India but according to EU specs and not Pakistani standard specs,” he added.

The exporter said that the commerce ministry awakened late and decided to contest the Indian claim in one of the Indian court. “This action will not serve any purpose as we know Indian tactics not in politics but also in trade,” he asserted.

Pakistan has hired a lawyer in New Delhi to work out details for contesting the Indian registration of Pakistani super basmati for export in May 2006.

The exporter suggested some stern action against the Indian government to salvage further damage to the rice commodity. “This is the right time for action as India is in short supply of basmati and they are nervous to ship huge committed quantity of basmati to EU,” the exporter added.

Re: Indians selling Pakistani rice under Indian banner...

Dear Pakpatriot

I am in Gulf and after reading this, called a guy known to me in supply chain of LuLu Hypermarket, here in Doha. He told, there is rice in LuLu coming both from Pakistan and India. I also enquired if Basmati from India is packed only in India and not anywhere else, his answer was affirmative.
Can't say about Europe, but for Gulf reporting seems bit biased in this case.

For business point of view, every country must register their product in time, since in modern day, ethics are the last thing moneymakers will care whether it's India or Pakistan does not matter.

As a consumer and living outside India, we hardly look whether rice, vegetables, fruits etc. are of Indian or Pakitsani origin.

Re: Indians selling Pakistani rice under Indian banner…

Re: Indians selling Pakistani rice under Indian banner…

A lot of our top quality basmati rice is also smuggled to India and then labelled as Indian Basmati, which is then exported.

REAP Urges Govt To Stop India From Exporting Basmati
The Rice Exporters Association Of Pakistani says that country’s basmati rice export may decline by around 50 % following the registration of super basmati rice in India as its own brand and the Indian government having given permission to their exporters to export the product.
REAP’s chairman said that it was “totally illegal” because super basmati rice was developed by the Pakistani agriculturists some 12 years before and only Pakistan has its Intellectual Property Rights.
He said that India has illegally grown super basmati and now the Indian government is falsely claiming super basmati as its own brand.

India Formally Adopts Pak’s “Super” Basmati Rice[India has formally adopted Pakistans super basmati rice for official export that could cause a loss of up to 40 per cent of the world market to Pakistan.

Indian commerce ministry had issued a notification on May 24, amending the Export of Basmati Rice (Quality Control and Inspection) Rules, 2003 to allow export of super basmati from India as an evolved (hybrid) variety.

With this decision, Indian exporters could label and market this variety as basmati in the overseas sector. Basmati was yet to be notified by the Indian agriculture ministry under the countrys Seed Act, which until now prohibited its sale in the local market with the same brand name.

Pakistan previously had a monopoly over super basmati but the latest Indian ratification would take away 40 per cent of Pakistans market share in the traditional Middle Eastern markets from the coming season by the variety at prices lower than offered by Pakistan. ..

Re: Indians selling Pakistani rice under Indian banner...

dont be too upset about cheap indian pussa.
again, if u dont like it, dont buy it.

Re: Indians selling Pakistani rice under Indian banner…

Really is an injustice…

Re: Indians selling Pakistani rice under Indian banner...

What is the difference between super and basmati rice?

Re: Indians selling Pakistani rice under Indian banner...

the rice in question is from gujranwala and is one of the finest of the worlds, there are indian importers and exporters sitting in dubai ordering them and labeling them as indian and then re-exporting them from dubai, the sad thing is that they are using pakistanis to export them the rice and they themselves know what the indians are doing but still selling them the rice just for money.

Re: Indians selling Pakistani rice under Indian banner...

there is nothing to moan about, if one cant stand for own rights, no one will. India will not stop using or abusing the brand for its own benefit until Pakistani will stand up to it and do whats required to get tested and authorised.

Also use other channels to stop india using Pakistani rice as their own produce. EU legislation clearly required to have country of origin. any thing malecious would be against the EU law.
