Indians, Pakistanis want closer ties
NEW DELHI: A majority of urban Indians and Pakistanis favor closer relations between the South Asian rivals, but many do not expect this to actually happen, according to a poll published on Thursday. Some 90 percent of Indians and 84 percent of Pakistanis favor greater people-to-people relations, said the survey conducted to mark the 60th anniversary of India and Pakistan’s independence from Britain. The poll, conducted jointly by the Indian Express newspaper, India’s CNN-IBN news television channel and Pakistan’s Dawn News channel, checked views among 2,030 people in urban India and 1,011 people in Pakistani cities. Eighty-six percent of people in both countries favor greater bilateral trade and 75 percent of those polled in India and Pakistan wanted to see an end to the nuclear arms race, according to the poll
