Indian veteran cricketers to tour Pakistan
From our correspondent
COLOMBO: An Indian veterans squad will be led by former Test captain Mohammad Azharuddin who is still fighting a court battle to clear his name in the match-fixing scandal and including former great Kapil Dev, will tour Pakistan next month to play a series of four one-day games.
The tour has been confirmed with the first match on April 22 in Karachi followed by games in Lahore, Gujranwala and Sialkot.
The tour is a return visit by the Indian veteran team in response to the Pakistan veterans’ squad that played in India some months ago.
Cricket lovers will get a chance to watch some of the leading names of yesteryears in the four matches with the duo of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis also agreeing to play in the matches being organised by the Pakistan Veteran Cricketers Association.
The Indians have confirmed the names of Azharuddin, Manoj Prabhakar, Nayan Mongia, Venkatesh Prasad, Javagal Srinath, Hemant Badadey, Parveen Amre, Ajay Jadeja, Rajesh Chohan, W.V. Raman, Sunil Joshi, N. Armani, Atul Wassan and Narendra Hirwani for the series.
The Pakistan squad will include Wasim Akram, Moin Khan, Rashid Latif, Rameez Raja, Ejaz Ahmed, Aamer Sohail, Saeed Anwar, Abdul Qadir, Waqar Younis, Zahid Ahmed, Saqlain Mushtaq, Mushtaq Ahmed, Mansoor Akhtar, Asif Mujtaba, etc.
Incidentally, several names in the above squads featured prominently in the match-fixing allegations and investigations that hit international cricket some years ago.
Azharuddin, who also played when Pakistan veterans toured India, is still serving a life ban for match fixing while others like Prabhakar, Jadeja, Kapil, Rashid, Wasim etc figured prominently in one way or the other in the match-fixing scandal.
“Look, all that is now part of history and all these players are now retired and out of commission so what is wrong with them playing at the veterans level. In fact I would also support for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to allow our former captain Saleem Malik to play in these four games,” a member of the Pakistan touring squad in Sri Lanka said on Thursday.
Malik is also banned for life like Azharuddin and also has his appeal pending in the courts to have the ban overturned.
Anyone in favor of Salim Malik or match fixing? ![]()
