This is such a sad story that it almost made me cry. What is going on in India. Why is the sexual frustration so high there? You get to hear such news almost every third month coming from this country.
I think I am going to blame the showbiz industry of India that is portraying a sexually liberal society and so focus on glamorizing sex and nudity. When rickshaw drivers and bus conductors watch such movies, it’s going to have a very sexually frustrated effect on them.
Maybe, our Indian guppies can shed a light on the reasons behind the ongoing crime of rape in India.

india - especially the cow-belt - now has women out and about in more places and activities than anytime in the past. but at the same time, a big chunk of the society still hangs on to the conservative side of things where only “bad women go out alone”. i dont know if you got to see the interview of the bus rapists, but the guy couldnt understand what he had done wrong - according to him, the girl was a slut to begin with, traveling alone at night with another guy who wasnt married, so she is no different from a prostitude and should just have agreed to have sex with him and his friends too. mindsets dont change together for everyone, and this will take a lot of social campaigning and what not.

in groups and in daylight or with their husbands, maybe. alone - not a chance. otherwise the only options in many of these parts is to be like phoolan devi, who too incidentally was raped as a child.
and its not just the culprit who blames the girl, plenty of conservatives do too for placing herself somewhere “decent women” wouldnt be.

He wanted to sleep with her because she was “bad girl”, but why brutal murder after ?

because she didnt just agree and fought back hard. according to him if she had just agreed without fighting everything would have been fine. (same view was echoed by some hindu religious leader too - to these people there is no concept of loyalty to a boyfriend, a girl with a boyfriend is just hungry for sex etc.) rape is usually more about power and abuse, and less about sex. this rapist is a guy who was married with children and all that. not some random horny teenager.

Thank you!!! The showbiz industry is definitely a contributing factor. It amazes me when people deny it; maybe they 're too attached to the racy item numbers. It really puts me off when the B-wood celebs come together to condemn a rape incident ..maybe shed a few tears…and then go back to producing item numbers depicting the heroines enjoying the lewd attention… Or harassment rather.

Not sure if you watched that documentary; maybe the guy has some psychological issues. What about the lawyer that is defending him? The lawyer said, if it were his daughter, he would have killed her. It speaks to the attitudes men have towards women, not just in India, even in Pakistan. Why should women be burdened for the ‘honor’ of the family while guys get away with such things as cat calls, eve teasing, abuse etc ? The reaction of Indians to that documentary was shameful. They blamed it on anti-India conspiracy of the west.

Really can’t relate to this aggressive behavior. Spent no time in those areas of the country. To steal from queers thoughts - it is the confluence of liberalization and ultra conservatism that creates such flash points. When a society is in transition from conservative to socially liberal, this is a one step back and hopefully 1.1 steps forward cycle. Repeated enough times, the cumulative net steps forward could life those portions of India towards more liberal policies and adoption of such policies.
To blame it on Bollywood makes no sense. Rapists will find raunchier avenues if a Bollywood becomes a temple of modesty and translucency.

Agree.. and if it’s mainly the media’s fault for showing ‘provocative’ dress or behaviour we’d expect countries like the UK to be much more unsafe for women as well..

Provocative dresses, dating, physical relationships are part of UK culture, so they have developed maturity about it. What they portray in Bollywood movies is hardly a reflection of their culture.

Those things haven’t always been socially acceptable here and the media isn’t always reflective of British culture either.. they show a lot of things which the average English person would not do or hasn’t been brought up with.. Mindsets have changed tho so that people who came across things they might not personally agree or be familiar with are still (generally) tolerated..
