indian teen age sensation IRFAN PATHAN

Pathan’s still pedalling his bike

*He’s the youngest member in the Indian squad (*pic below with his family)Tall. Dashing. And now, handsome too, say the girls of his city. Yet, the ground is still firmly beneath his feet. The down-to-earth Irfan Pathan, Team India’s newest member, still considers Rs 10 ‘‘somewhat costly’’ for an ice-cream.

[thumb=D]photo18114_32558051.JPG[/thumb]

If you thought success would go to Pathan’s head, think again. The world record performance in the Under-19 Asia Cup cricket championship hardly made a dent in his life.

He’s still the same Baroda lad **who recites the Koran five times a day, lives in the same one-room house in Jumma Masjid and rides the same old bicycle given to him by his father. ** shabash kid :k:

Petrol is costly for the Hero Honda Splendour bought on instalment. And he still spends his spare time sitting on the mosque steps with his buddies. Celebration is a plate of biryani cooked by his mother and an occasional movie with friends.

Even now, Irfan hasn’t been to the posh Alkapuri or the ‘happening’ campus area Fatehgunj. His world is his cricket and his home, the mosque. And he doesn’t regeret that. **‘‘The mosque is like a ‘gurukul’ and its gates close at 9 pm,’’ says Irfan. **

His family, which lives in the mosque where his father is the muezzim, is just as down-to-earth. Shamim Bano, his mother, says: ‘‘I don’t think we need to change the house. We are happy to be living in a mosque. Agreed, it’s just one room and a little congested. But we have lived all our lives here so we don’t feel uncomfortable at all’’.

Till recently, the salary of Irfan’s father, Mehmood Khan, was a paltry Rs 700 a month. Some income also came from the one-cabinet perfume shop on the steps of the Masjid. But barely enough to met their monthly expenses .

Shamim Bano played a major role in motivating Irfan and his brother Yousuf, an all-rounder who currently plays for the Baroda Ranji team.

In times of financial crises, says Irfan, her strong willpower kept them going. ‘‘She wanted me to become a hafez (Islamic scholar). But still inspired me to perform to the best of my ability . She takes a keen interest in my game and gets disappointed when I don’t perform well. When I come back from a tour, she asks how many wickets I have brought for her.’’

Irfan’s come a long way all right. From the time his father got him plastic balls, cheap bats, second-hand shoes, to the time his uncle, Ahmed, coach and other senior cricketers from the city donated him cricket gear, clothes. In fact, he got his first kit after playing for the Under-15. And his ambition now? ‘‘To bowl as fast and as accurately as I can.’’ *

Now this is a cricketer / sportsman I would like to see excel regardless of the national/religious boundaries. We need more stories like these.

i hope that one room house in the mosque never becomes too small for him....
and i hope that 9pm doors dont stay open till 5 am....

(1) Increases my trust in the team selection process (esp. during these times of a bribery scandal)
(2) It gives hopes to the millions of poor street cricket stars in India who bat and bowl from a crease of *chappals
. They will look up to Pathan as their role model.

A few years ago, the media had a similar story to tell about another pacemen n Doda Ganesh when he broke into the international scene but he did not have a long stint.... hopefully Irfan Pathan will be different .

oh come on... dont give us this bul**** that every thing in india is based on merit....i know ur damn cricket system very well... it is purely based on quota system and one reason why pathan is in team is beacause this time quota was acting in his favor...i give you my word that if a player from pathan's state ( i think he plays for baroda) was already selected in the team, no matter how talented mr. pathan is, he wud have never made into the final 16.

plus selectors in india who represent different regions go beyond their responsibilties to make sure that some one is in the team from their own state...and i know many examples... vinod kamble career was finsihed because of this reason. one of the reason why kale was forced to bribe is the ugly quota system in india. the guy has scored 24 first class centuries at an astonishing avergae of 60 in 84 matches. yet, he was never given any chance (except one) because state of maharashtar has already enough players playing for india. anyway, just wanted to educate you about your own cricket system. and yeah, i know india is not the only country who has the quota system so please dont waste time by citing some examples....

U people better be praying this guy is of any good...or else ur Srinath's and Prasad's will have to make another come back.

Speaking of Junaid Zia...he looks a lot better, and bowls a lot better than ur Salvis and Bangars and Agarkars....

Phoenixdesi bhai... Where did I say that Indian selection is free of all bias, nepotism etc....It may actually be but I dont know enough to be sure. I am a hardcore opponent of the quota system myself but I give credit where it is due...like in Irfan's case.
You are more or less right about the quota system though I dont think Irfan's selection was because of the quota thing... Zaheer and I think Parthiv also play from the same zone.
The problem with the Indian selection process is that the selection comittee consists of selectors from each zone who fight hard to get someone from their zone selected. This is not favourtism par se but the fallout of a flaw in the organizational setup(augurs well for national integration though).

well, quota system is a very comlpex system...it is not that simple... it has a lot of other "set-up'points too... for example, zaheer plays for baroda but he was born in maharashtra so i guess he is eligible to use his domicile for that state to win a seat in the team... whereas, parthiv and pathan both were born in gujrat and also play a gujrat team (baroda)....anyway, i am gald you agree with me and i also agree that given the size and diversity of india, sometime quota system augers well for national integration...we have our own problems with the quota system but i guesss as of now we we dont apply it to the selection process ( i am talking about cricket only). apart from india, south africa and west indies have a worst quota system too.,.

I hope this guy does well, he seems like a great person.

As for your country having honest selection policies, my god I hope for your sake that is not true. Hoe else can you explain the fact that the 1/5th of the worlds population can’t produce a single fast bowler and has a mediocre team in the one and only sport they play. Either an embarassing lack of natural talent or corruption, pick your excuse.
I would opt for corruption
:rotfl:

bhayeeon please... dont fight for nothing...
lets hope, he proves his selection right, and he grooms into a nice bowler..
Indian needs a deadly duo and its a high time they find another good bowler.. Nehra,Zaheer and Irfan could be deadly in the times to come.

**Oooouuuuuch !!! that one is hard to handle … ** :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :hehe: :hehe: :hehe:

Re: indian teen age sensation IRFAN PATHAN

Aw, isn’t this heart warming. I didn’t know it was possible to survive on 700 bucks. Well, if he does become a true sensation and make millions it won’t go to his head, like it did briefly for Zaheer.

ps. Zaheer plays from Baroda too.

^ Its 700 Rupees
I wish him all the best!

Stop making hype of something we have not seen yet, let him come on the scene and let his performance talk instead of articles after articles. great that he is down-to-earth, but I think so is Sachin but he lets his bat do the talk and he does not need articles to do it.

The Game Responds:

*Oh for God's sake! There have been so many Pakistani players who have come from poor"er" backgrounds. This is all pathetic media hype I tell you. Really. People, That Is All.*

Players from Baroda
Zaheer Khan
Irfan Pathan

Please notice two left arm bowlers from the same side

Others of recent vintage

Connor Williams
Nayan Mongia
Rakesh Patel

Kiran More is the selector

BTW, I agree that quota is a criteria and bribery has been mentioned before (Sujith Somasundar opening against South Africa cannot be anything else) but these are not a neccessity.

For example there was at one time, I think the South Africa series 7 players (Dravid, Kumble, David Johnson, Ganesh, Joshi, Prasad, Srinath) from the same state in the team.

Lets hope he performs well. PPl from subcontinent make heros very quickly n then destroy immediately. Nehra is a good example. In one game he played well n is made a hero

Zaheer Khan is from Shrirampur a small town in Maharashtra. Does he play for the Baroda team?

Zaheer plays for Baroda cause he couldnt get into the Bombay team.

The Baroda team is as follows.

CC Williams, SS Parab, NR Mongia, JJ Martin, TB Arothe, HR Jadhav, AP Bhoite, RB Patel, RV Pawar, S Joshi, IS Pathan. IK Pathan, Zaheer Khan.

There are two Irfan Pathan in the team, and both are left arm seamers.

BTW, the other pace hope, Munaf Patel, may also play for Baroda since his home state is Gujarat but he is not happy there.....

I think one other reason is that Baroda is one of teh few state associations which have quality greentops in teh country and pace bowlers have a good time there...

why the hell munaf patel won't play for gujrat. thats his home state ain't it.

^ He is playing for Gujrat finally. It seems there was some ego-clash which has been sorted out.
