In a minor surprise, Yuvraj Singh was included ahead of Mohammad Kaif in the 14-member Indian squad for the first Test against Pakistan. Yuvraj had been dropped from the team during India’s series against Australia last year, and Kaif had played some impressive innings in the chances that he got. But the selectors preferred Yuvraj because of his performance against Pakistan last year, as well as his domestic record.

The rest of the team was along expected lines, with Sachin Tendulkar having declared himself fit and being included in the side. Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh were the two spinners picked, with Irfan Pathan, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra and L Balaji to fight it out for two, or maybe three, fast-bowling slots.

Dinesh Karthik was chosen as the wicketkeeper, although Mahendra Dhoni, with a sparkling century in the recent Challengers Trophy, had been tipped by some to be a dark horse for that position. Suprisingly, Dhoni wasn’t chosen for the Board President’s XI squad that takes on Pakistan in the first tour game. Parthiv Patel got the nod ahead of him for the tour game.

Kaif was named to captain the BP XI, with Venugopal Rao acting as his vice-captain. Dheeraj Jadhav, Satyajit Parab and Shikhar Dhawan were the three openers in the squad, with the middle order being manned by Suresh Raina and Niraj Patel. Ramesh Powar got a look in, but Murali Kartik was left out.

Indian squad 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 VVS Laxman, 6 Sourav Ganguly (capt), 7 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 Anil Kumble, 10 Harbhajan Singh, 11 Zaheer Khan, 12 Yuvraj Singh, 13 Ashish Nehra, 14 L Balaji.

Board President’s XI squad 1 Dheeraj Jadhav, 2 Satyajit Parab, 3 Shikhar Dhawan, 4 Mohammad Kaif (capt), 5 Venugopal Rao, 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Parthiv Patel (wk), 8 Ramesh Powar, 9 Gagandeep Singh, 10 SS Paul, 11 RP Singh, 12 R Ramkumar, 13 Ranadeb Bose, 14 Niraj Patel.

(1) Did a Ctrl+F on Agarkar....Didn't find him...so that's good news.

(2) Dhoni should have at least been picked up for the Board President's XI.
(What do the selectors want to see in Patel that they have not seen before?).

Re: Indian Squad Announced for the ...

Patel I guess they cant get enuFFF of him :p
and Agarkar is history for sure !
and I have a feeling they might rotate Dhoni, Like aussies did with Haddin and Gilchrist.

Re: Indian Squad Announced for the ...

btw, "Dhoni" is being projected as the future "Gilchrist" of India by the media.

Reminds me of Awishkaar Salvi - who was supposed to be the future "McGrath".

Now why are our future Gilchrists and McGraths not even in the Board President's XI ?

Re: Indian Squad Announced for the ...

well coz this is India my friend, same applies to Pakistani players :p

when they see prospect they have a keera ...wait nahi Anaconda !

Re: Indian Squad Announced for the ...

Well, we can always 2nd guess - but best of luck Team India

Re: Indian Squad Announced for the ...

yes 1st guess was Patel bhai, us nay apnay paer per khudi khulari mari
2nd was Dhoni he didnt made it

Re: Indian Squad Announced for the …

:rotfl: @ anaconda instead of keera

Re: Indian Squad Announced for the ...

squad was pretty predictable. Even though people say yuvi over kaif was a suprise, it hardly is since yuvraj has been doing pretty decent. The one thing i am not happy about is patel/karthick over dhoni. Well, i mean he sure aint no gilchrist or anything but he has lots of potential and is a very talented batsmen/wicketkeeper. hopefully there will be a rotation like someone said.

Re: Indian Squad Announced for the ...

^In any case, one can somewhat fathom selectors preffering Kartik over Dhoni,But preffering Patel over Dhoni is a bit hard to digest.how many more chances are they going to give lil'ol butterfingers.Isn't his keeping costing India 2 series over australia(and god knows how many more matches)enough.I smell some regional politics on this issue, someone is hell-bent on keeping him in the team.the guy sure has a strong lobby.

Re: Indian Squad Announced for the ...

^Agree 100%

I have never understood why the team has to have representation from all regions reflecting the composition of the selection committee itself.

I don't care if all the 11(or 15) players are from Tamil Nadu or Delhi as long as that is the best team available.
