Good old double standards.
It has changed quite a bit though; in the last few years, most of the Sikh girls I have seen at weddings, eat meat and drink alcohol - out in the open. Whether this is progress is, I suppose, a matter of opinion.
The Sikh community in Glasgow scared me a bit though, it was like a timewarp.

but correct me if i'm wrong but in hinduism there is no strict written rule that no alcohol shall be consumed. In terms of most things in life it's more of a guideline of everything in moderation

could a hindu that knows the scriptures inside and out let us know for sure?

Hinduism is way too complex and multilayered... it doesnt usually have strict rules or regulations to follow.. since the scriptures are spread thousands of years apart from each other.... you can find phrases from different scriptures and support both sides of the alcohol story.... that's my understanding at least.. of course i only waste a limited amount of time on religion..

alright just to lay it to rest, one learned hindu friend that was pretty well versed in the upanishads and bhagawat gita was the one that told me this, that with most things in hinduism people need to use their brains about every day issues of alcohol consumption, eating, sleeping, sex, working, whatever....moderation is key. extremes of anything can lead to problems which is true if you think about it. not sure if the vedas have anything on it though, it's mostly about limiting it. anyways, that's the golden rule i go by regardless of religion.
