NEW DELHI (AFP) - India’s outgoing cricket coach John Wright may not have renewed his contract because he was humiliated by players under his command, Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar claimed.

“One of the things that may have made up John’s mind not to renew his contract could have been the way some players treated him in the last year,” Gavaskar wrote in his widely syndicated column.

“He was told off and sworn at by some players.”

Wright, a former New Zealand captain, stepped down as India’s first foreign coach in April after a five-year tenure, having declined an offer by the Indian cricket board to remain coach till the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies.

Australian batting great Greg Chappell was appointed Wright’s successor last week by a six-man selection panel that included Gavaskar, two other former captains Ravi Shastri and Srinivas Venkatraghavan and three administrators.

Media reports suggested that Gavaskar wanted an Indian to coach the national team, although cricket board president Ranbir Singh Mahendra said the decision to appoint Chappell was “unanimous.”

Gavaskar’s startling claim without naming any player was made in the context of a debate whether the team needed an Indian or a foreign coach. He said the column, printed across India over the last two days, was written before the panel met on Thursday to pick a new coach.

“One thing is sure – however inefficient an Indian coach would be, there is little chance that he could be abused to his face by any player, however big the players may be,” Gavaskar wrote.

The Indian cricket board played down Gavaskar’s claim.

“We never received any complaints from Wright about players’ behaviour,” Mahendra told AFP. “I don’t think he would have taken such a thing lightly.”

Senior Indian players like Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar are holidaying abroad and were not available for comment.

Wright has returned home to New Zealand.

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

Sad........very sad indeed…..John Wright did so much for the Indian cricket but Indians turned out to be real selfish and arrogant…..I can not believe they abused and swore at john right instead of listening to him but you never know...that cartoon harbhajan singh is totally capable of doing such a stupid thing.....and that idiot zaheer khan who has such a mediocre career also has some attitude problem ......and every one knows that psychotic Maharaja ganguly is a super super idiot with a serious attitude problem……

we all know that indians are the biggest chokers in International cricket. So there is no point in getting upset at John Wright when he said that the Indian team lacks the killer instinct. Instead of improving themselves, they stated abusing their own coach……what a loser… anyway, now we all know why John right left...thanks for disclosing it Mr. gavaskar and for creating some serious trouble for the Indian team....I am sure it will demoralize the Indian team more and frankly speaking I want them to be demoralized…..Jang aur mohabbat may sub jaizz ha.....

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

Well the only decent person in the indian side is rahul dravid, apart from him everyone seems to have attitude problem. So if gavaskar is saying the truth, then it could be anyone except dravid.

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

The whole premise of Gavaskar’s argument is quite thin. How would having an Indian coach make any difference? Seeing an Indian as a coach is not likely to change a super-star’s temper tantrums. The Indian-born coach would have resigned too.

There was an article](Cricket News, Live Cricket Scores, ICC Cricket World T20 2016 News & Headlines | Times of India)on Times of India, about the lessons Indian can learn from Pakistan’s recent successes. Pretty good actually. And the best lesson is to get rid of “super-star” mentality. Reputations don’t win matches. Anyone who thinks he is bigger than the team, should be kicked out.

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

I just can't imagine 5'5 Tendi and Sehwag abusing Wright. They probably had to use a ladder to slap him.

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

So the Indian coach can respond back to Harbhajan in hindi/punjabi, ,Bhajee,“Teri pahen hoye gee” , “tera peoO hoye ga,maa da khasam”
Where as John swallowed it all ,which was not good for his health, hence he left..

Chappal will be another Chapaal on Indians pride, who prefer miracles of Bhagwaan Kishen at every step of the way,Is Chappal upto this karma?

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

Agree. Dravid is a real sportsman and is not like the rest of the “sarial” and “rondu” team. I remember Dravid giving Afridi a pat on the back when he got out after scoring that blazing hundred. Also, he said some nice words about the Pakistani team at the ceremony after the last match :k:

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

^ i also remember the 'wall' having a massive argument with afridi, during the 5th or 6th odi in india. he is no angel buddy.

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

^ If its the same game I remember, then Dravid was batting and Afridi was bowling, and Afridi was trying to sledge Dravid. Dravid never responded at all. Infact, it looked pretty bad on the part of Afridi. This is the post where I commented on it.

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

Usually I don’t like indians players because of their stupid attitude specially when they are winning. I hate kaif, kumble and harbhajan the most. But you have to admit it, dravid is one real gentleman in the side. He should be a role model for every cricketer.

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

Well said. :k:

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

lets not get their gods involved in all of this

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

well they r all chootyas except for dravid, i mean the gesture after 6th odi and indian tour was amazing i never thought an indian could do that! sachin, is the ringleader of the chootyas!

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

as far as i can remember dravid was on the non-strikers end and afridi ‘n’ him had a massive verbal ‘banter’, before afridi walked away to his fielding position, which was mid off i think but he kept yapping until he got their.

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

^ That must be a different incident. The one I remember is where Afridi was bowling to Dravid, and between each delivery, Afridi will walk up to the batsman to pick up the ball and will constantly be sledging and saying something to Dravid. In response, Dravid kept firmly quiet.

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

I’m not gonna comment on the characters of the Indian players… we have enough of our own snooty and often concieted players to deal with including the likes of Afridi, Akhtar, Sami etc. - frankly I’m disappointed with some of the replies in this thread cuz like Faisal said, there’s basically little rigor to the argument put forth by Gavaskar… and even if it were true, we gotta pore over our own state of affairs rather than passing judgements over another team.

But yes… gotta give it to Dravid :k: for being a gentleman everytime I’ve seen him play… same goes for VVS Laxman who always listens to the opposition’s invective language without reacting.

Re: Indian players abused former coach Wright, says Gavaskar

This really makes no sense. Since when would John Wright take any crap from the players?

Gora saab is always the master....that's the entire reasoning behind getting these foreigners in as coaches.

IF there was any "telling off" or swearing....it must've been well-deserved regarding some particular incident, because for any of those guys to muster the guts to verbally assault John Wright, it would have to take something pretty bad from his side.....but in all likelihood, Gavaskar is talking out of his buttocks or by 3rd degree hearsay (most likely option).
