Indian/Pakistani Fashion

I’m not sure if there’s a thread about this already but I’m interested in the difference/similarities between Indian and Pakistani fashion (I’m aware that there are regional differences also), including bridal trends. I have found that often I’m able to identify whether an outfit is Indian or Pakistani style, but alot of times I can’t really tell the difference (perhaps many times there isnt that much of a difference?). Someone enlighten me please, with the help of pictures. Thanks!

Well, I think that Indian tend to show their stomach, whereas Paki brides dont, plus i think the side jhoomer is a asian muslim tradition...Also I only ever seen paki brides wear ghararas, so thats probably a paki muslim tradition...

Re: Indian/Pakistani Fashion

In general, Indian dresses are over the top! too heavy IMHO. Pakistani dresses are more modern, sleeker and stylish.

Re: Indian/Pakistani Fashion

i think they're just very different concepts to begin with.. indians like to play with bolder bigger motifs and embellishments, while pakistanis go for finer, more intricate kaam. you could say pakistanis tend to focus on enhancing the the actual kapre, while indians tend to create something else starting with the kapre.

but i wouldn't say one IS BETTER than the other, because they're apples and oranges to me. it always depends on your taste and the look you're going for. naturally, this being a pakistani based forum, you're going to see pakistani designs in a more favorable light. but likewise, many will sometimes generalize pakistani designs as too light, simple, underdone, or sometimes just safe and boring. I've seen beautiful contributions from both, so i try not to compare. :)

Indians have deep cut necks in the back. Pakistani clothes tend not to have that. I would say we get Indian clothes here in desi fabric stores, and compared to my Pakistani clothes I would say Indian ones are more traditional, and Pakistani is more modern, but it also depends on price the one's we order from Pakistan are usually more expensive.

Re: Indian/Pakistani Fashion

if we talk abut bridal dresses then pakistani dresses r modern n stylish but i do agree dat some indian designers show their super collection in suits(kameez shalwar) n frock ect...actually pakistani's common wear is their traditional dresses n indians mostly wear jeans ect(young ones) so in pakistan ladies need n demand more n more varaiety,variations..n designers hv to work on it...

True, I AGREE...

Also, I personally only get pakistani jorey coz I prefer them, its not to say that Indians ones are completely bad, but coz in Australia, they only have indian outlets but they are too expensive, its just not worth it, so i prefer to get them from paki. I also they that pakistani caprey are more modest (too me at least) compared to the Indian ones. Some indians clothes esp bridal I would never wear, too revealing.

From my experience- i have both indian and pakistani clothes:

Material- i prefer the quality of indian material- they silk and brocade i have is usually thicker, smoother, and heavier whereas my pakistani outfits have very thin silk or are made of more sheer material, i guess to make them more flow-y and have a good fall.

Design- Here again, I think india has a little more variety. I feel like pakistani outfits tend to be the same kameez with trousers/shalwar and now capri. In the pakistani stores in the US, there's like one churidar and tons of shalwar/trouser/capri outfits, whereas in the indian stores you can find lenghas, churidars, regular suits, sarees, etc. And i feel like indians have a distinct design for each different outfit- for instance i find pakistani sarees look like cropped kameezes with extra long dupattas, wheras indian sarees are totally diff from their suits.

Tailoring- Pakistan wins out here- the fit and standard detailing is much better- you will always see tucks and zipper, with contrast piping and covering the back of kaam with some jacquard. I always see indian outfits and say - what kind of huge box did they make this for?

Kaam- again, i prefer pakistani kaam- it's usually very neat and delicate with attention to details; with indian kaam sometimes you're lucky, sometimes you're not.

The differences are small, but you can get an idea from the overall look. I can usually tell by the guests in the picture too- you'll see more sarees in indian pics, more suits in pakistani ones. Also, pakistani outfits will be more modest of course, and of course ghararas tend to be a muslim outfit whether from india or pakistan. If it were up to me, I'd love to have an indian designed outfit with indian cloth but tailored in pakistan with pakistani kaam! I feel like that's the best mix!

Re: Indian/Pakistani Fashion

Okay, I find 98% Indian clothing plain tacky. From the cut, colors, kaam and design. It screams OTT and looks outdated.

I find Pakistani clothing designed amazingly. The colors, the way it's presented. Everything is more subtle and elegent. Even when we go OTT, it's done in a glamorous way as opposed to insanely tacky colors/cuts.

^Okay, I find 98% of pakistani material cheap and low quality. And can they freakin' make anything other than shalwar kameez??? How do you like that? Please be a *little *more respectful and a little more objective. You're basically saying that 1/2 my desi wardrobe and 95% of my mom's wardrobe is tacky- which I know is not true, I do have taste. I think it depends on taste and what you're looking for. If you're looking for suits, it's pakistan's strength. Saree? head over to india. You can't compare the two.

Look you like it because that's what you're used to- i agree that pakistani kaam and detailing is really good. But I was really disappointed in the type of material they used compared to indian and frustated by the lack of variety. A lady was selling a silk suit and I was like this is silk?? like even cheap indian silk is always smooth and has a sheen- i had never seen silk that didn't look/feel like silk- but someone not used to indian silk might not have noticed it. And every time I go to a pakistani store like 90% of what they have is shalwar or trouser outfits, when I'm looking for a churidar or something different. You can't look for pakistani clothes in india or indian clothes in pakistan- if you try, you'll think the other place is in your words, "tacky". I find pakistani sarees tacky and too suit-like, but that's b/c i'm used to indian ones. so you see each place has its strengths and weaknesses- it can't be possible that a whole country is 98% tacky.

And the OP's question was about how you spot differences. Basically you're saying that if it's looks good, it's paki, if not, its indian?

Re: Indian/Pakistani Fashion

^I agree, i love my sarees and I can't imagine finding something as nice in pakistan.

But i think that's just cause they're not big on sarees as they are on suits like you said. I think Indian designers have a very different vision from that of Pakistani designers. So it's just futile to try to compare them.

I don't think pakistani sarees are that bad...c'mon guys u havnt seen the Rehana Saigol collection...its beautiful...

Although, Im not exposed to Indian clothing much, I cant say ones better than the other. But if u know where to look, YES pakistanis make really nice jorey besides shalvar kameez.

^it's not about not looking good- pakistani sarees do look quite nice. It's just that to me, they look too "suit-ish", it's just not what I'm used to seeing in a saree. Indian sarees classically get their design from a patterned weave- the pallu/border are all part of the cloth itself, I find pakistani sarees are usually cloth with kaam that makes the design, which is fine and all, there are indian sarees like that too, but you can't really buy/wear too many of them. and I agree 100% that if you look in the right places, you can find variety, just like if you have a good eye, you can find an indian outfit to your taste. I was just a little annoyed at blanket statements like "99% indian clothes are tacky".

Re: Indian/Pakistani Fashion

i think Indian dresses are more experimental .a big factor is their culture ,they are open to experiment everything here it gets limited . moreover Indian designers (majority of them ) develop their own fabric for the cuts of their dresses so its not available anywhere in the market which is quite the opposite case over here . Pakistanis have more delicate approach towards the work done on dresses however the best expertise still lie in India the chunri and kundan masters still dwell in their old cities . its just the matter of personal choice and cultures that we like a particular style of clothing . Indian designers are way more developed because of their exposure through movies and media . here media plays a minimal role however there is still a flow of good ideas in the market. be it Indian or pakistani both have their own impact . comparison is just not possible

Re: Indian/Pakistani Fashion

How can ANYONE say pakistanis don't make saris? Hello? It's our dress as well. And Pakistani silk is amazing! I got some from Lahore as a gift and you can tell it's good-quality stuff.

I stick w/ my opnion on Indian clothes being tacky.

I was chatting with a friend the other day, and she was saying how the tikka, the naath and brides wearing the colour red is an Indian tradition that we've adopted. I was wondering what other traditions we have have been influenced by other traditions...

From what I know the saree, hands down, is an Indian/hindu tradition.

The gharara, peshwaz/anarkali and the side jhoomer is a muslim tradition in India and pakistan.

The shalvar kameez..im not so sure where that came from...mayb is just developed as ours?...

Re: Indian/Pakistani Fashion

im pretty sure the shalwar kameez was around in india before pakistan even existed. and also, it's not that pakistanis don't make sarees. they DO, and i've seen many wear them. but you can just TELL that it's not their 'thing' like an indian or bengali. It's staple wardrobe for majority of indians/bengalis. for pakistanis, not so much. so naturally their selection is going to be sub-par to indians when it comes to saris.

Re: Indian/Pakistani Fashion

i prefer paki kaam over indi kaam
