Indian nuke scientist gone missing

MUMBAI: A joint operation has been launched by the CISF and the local police to trace a scientist of Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant, who went missing four days back, an Indian news channel quoted a top police official as saying.

L Mahalingam, a top nuclear scientist working at the Kaiga nuclear facility in the Karwar district of Karnataka has been missing since Monday morning.

Mahalingam, who hails from Anna Nagar in Chennai, had gone for his usual morning walk on Monday and has not returned ever since. Although no ransom note or call has been received till now, his wife Vinayaka Sundari is not ruling out kidnap and has since filed an FIR at the Mallapur police station.

The missing nuclear scientist is one of the top officials working in the training section – with access to sensitive documents - of the very important facility tucked away in the remote Karwar region bordering Goa, near to the where the Indian armed forces are building one of their biggest bases – Project Seabird.

“Intensive search is being carried out round the clock by a 40-member team comprising the CISF and local police personnel to trace N Mahalingam, missing since June 8 from the Kaiga township,” Superintendent of Police, Uttara Kannada Raman Gupta told.

The police is looking at other angles too as the colony in Mallapur where the incident happened is amidst thousands of acres of dense forests with a sizeable number of leopards. Police with the help of CISF are also planning to launch a search operation in some parts of the forest.

Gupta said that so far no clues had been found so it was difficult to say anything at this juncture.

According to Kaiga spokesperson, a massive manhunt has been launched for Mahalingam. Forest range officer of Kaiga has also been notified to join in the manhunt.

Indian nuke scientist goes missing

Uh ohhh… That’s not good at all for India.

Could he have been kidnapped by RSS and affiliate extremists? What if extremists get their hands on vital information. This is disasterous for the region, and world must do its part to save Indian nukes from falling in the wrong hands.

Or maybe he just went defected and is in the “safety” of another nation considering he was working on and knew sensitive information about the new Army base being built to counter China.

Oh the possibilities…and just for the fun of it, maybe it’s ISI at it like always. :cryb:

Alright…all sensationalism aside, this is truly worrysome, but i’m hopeful the team will find him. I just hope he is returned in good health.
What are the possibilities though?

Re: Indian nuke scientist gone missing

Your concern is well warranted in case of Indian scientists since they actually know this stuff. If it were a Pakistani nuclear scientist disappearing we need not really be that worried since there's very little they can divulge other than how to smuggle technology in or how to paint stuff green.

Thanks for being a global citizen and expressing concern

Re: Indian nuke scientist gone missing

right…then why does AQ Khan give the world a diarrhea if he’s of no concern like his fellow teammates? :hehe: But that’s off-topic. Nice deflection. Now focus on this thread and this issue.

Thanks for noticing my concern. Now go and find your scientist, lest he spill the information to the wrong people and jeopardize Shining India.

Re: Indian nuke scientist gone missing

^^^ Again OFF TOPIC
There is an option available called PM you can make use of that.

On topic now; Well, I don't think Indians are that stupid to involve ISI in this but the worry is if he is in the hands of those extremist Hindus then there is a big worry for Pakistan.

Re: Indian nuke scientist gone missing

He might have been involved in 'irregular' activities?

Re: Indian nuke scientist gone missing

At this point it's all possibilities and speculation. But failure to recover the missing scientist will have devastating consequences for the entire region including India itself which has so far projected itself to be a suitable nuclear partner with USA. Come to think of it, BJP was against the deal and their close association with RSS nutcases is widely known, so it's all within the realm of possibility that he may have been kidnapped to sabotage the gem PM Singh jewelled for the nation.

Again, the second time. Its not about Pakistani nuclear people. That is off topic.
Which part of this you do not understand?

This Indian dude must be found soon. Its worrisome.

Re: Indian nuke scientist gone missing

It takes the Indian police 4 days to start searching for a top Indian nuclear scientist?

4 ****ing days? You gotta be kidding me. That is beyond pathetic.

Re: Indian nuke scientist gone missing

if that had been pakistani whole western media would have been on its toes and specially indian one...

Re: Indian nuke scientist gone missing

all the nuke scientists need to disappear from the face of mother earth.

Re: Indian nuke scientist gone missing

Yes, that would be smart. Why not take the technological advances that came with nuclear technology with them. So someone who suffers from a curable cancer can not be cured.

i thought there was a difference between nuke and nuclear energy, nuke usually refers to nuclear weapons, no?

Re: Indian nuke scientist gone missing

There is a difference between a nuke and nuclear energy. But the technology is dual purpose. A good deal of bio/chemical and nuclear technology is dual purpose, it can be used for medical purposes and destroying the world.

Thats when you say, dogs bark

Offcourse you are right (and I am going terribly off the topic) but the medical purposes that serve the social advances are usually fringe benefits while the main aim is usually about empowerment and security that comes with the ability to destroy. Not that there is anything wrong with that but philosophically speaking it effectively triggers off arms race. In classic prisoner’s dilemma I curse the initiator the rest have to follow suit or most probably pay the price. Or may be even the initiator is in an invisible bind about who gets there first?

Nobody really cares what the topic is here. As for benefits I agree and disagree. The original development of nuclear technology was military in nature. But then the modes of funding have diversified greatly. The government spends on the military aspect. But a good deal of foundations and research institutions focus on medical break throughs. And its usually based off these medical break throughs that further military development is based. As is the case with biological warfare.

As for the prisioners delimma in the South Asian context, I see your point but in the case of Pakistan it is simply a deterrent so that India never attacks us again. So that we have a way to defend ourselves. However if you throw China into the mix, now that would be very very interesting.

Re: Indian nuke scientist gone missing

This guy would have gone for some fishing. He will reurn.

so what does that tell you? they are not the same

Re: Indian nuke scientist gone missing

The latest news about this missing scientist is that, either he has defected to some other country (hmm..) or has been bought by terrorists.

Both ways a dangerous development. World should come together to pressure india to increase the safety of its nukes and nuclear scientists before its too late. It is dismal at the moment, to say the least. There are reports that US was pressuring india few years back to stop proliferation. I think they should be more scared and active now as well.
