GANDHINAGAR: That the government of Chief Minister Narendra Modi sees the Godhra carnage through different lenses than the revenge attacks which have left over 450 dead across the state was reinforced by another decision on Monday: compensation for the victims.
The government has decided that families of those killed in the Godhra attack on the Sabarmati Express will be paid Rs 2 lakh while relatives of those killed in the violence following Godhra will get Rs 1 lakh per victim. :teetie:
When asked about the discrepancy, Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) C K Koshi told this website’s newspaper: “We are only following a precedent. Since 1992, we have been paying Rs 2 lakh to any victim linked to the Ayodhya movement. Those on board the Sabarmati Express qualify under this precedent and, therefore, the amount.”
Meanwhile, although Home Minister L K Advani reiterated the it’s-a-blot statement on Monday saying that the violence had tarnished the Centre’s image, it was BJP chief Jana Krishnamurthy’s turn to push the party line.
After visiting the affected areas, he announced the Aantarik Atankwad Virodh Divas (Internal Terrorism Opposition Day) on March 9 saying the party would call public meetings to “spread the message of communal harmony.”
When asked why such a day was needed, Krishnamurthy said that the “anti-terrorism” day would tell people what happened in Gujarat, why it happened and how much the people of Gujarat have suffered.
Unlike Advani who said that both Godhra and the revenge attacks were acts of terror, Krishnamurthy, linking Godhra to the ISI, said: “The post-Godhra violence, though strongly condemnable, is a result of revulsion after Godhra. You can’t count out human feelings.”
This echoes Modi’s line as well.
When asked whether the Sangh was responsible for the bandh call after Godhra and the subsequent violence, Krishnamurthy said: “Some 3,600 Sikhs died in the 1984 riots (after Indira Gandhi was assassinated). Similarly, certain Congress members are being accused for the Godhra riots. Does that mean the entire Congress, including its president Sonia Gandhi was responsible for Godhra? Similarly, you cannot blame the entire Sangh Pariwar or the entire Vishwa Hindu Parishad for the post-Godhra violence.”
He added: “That does not mean the violence was justified. It needs to be strongly condemned.”
