Amid a politically charged national debate over religious intolerance, a Muslim man was beaten to death on Monday by a mob of Hindus who suspected him of stealing a cow, a revered symbol in the Hindu religion. It was the fourth time in six weeks that Hindus had killed Muslims they suspected of slaughtering, stealing or smuggling cows.

The police found the bloodied and battered body of the man, Mohammad Hasmat Ali, early Monday morning in the remote village of Uchekon Moiba Thongkhong in Manipur, a state in northeast India. Mr. Ali, 55, married with three sons, was a leader in the neighboring village of Keirao Makting, where he was headmaster of a madrasa. Police officials said Mr. Ali had no criminal record and no known links to the cattle business.

its kind of like the indian version of 'blasphemy' related mob justice (aka murder, property damage etc) ..pathetic stuff
people need to grow up and politicians need to sort themselves out

Mob mentality becomes spurred for several reasons.

We should use historical mob situations to analyse what is causing them.

KKK, Ghustakh-e-Rasool mobs, Sacred-cow mobs, all share some features.

They all contain some presence of local police involvement. When members of the law enforcement become infiltrated by such right-wing people that is a definite cause of mob type activity to take root.

They all happen by a majority over individuals in minority in the same area. It should be easy for the law to identify people at risk of such attacks and provide measures for their protection. CCTV etc ...

Local news and local get togethers and also social media conversations bent on fuelling hatred should be monitored - these are catalysts for attacks and they are the places where actual attacks are organised ... Time and place.

Reverse infiltration should be happening. Good people from the majority community should get themselves involved in their activities and ensure their plans are reported and prevented. All too often the extreme groups manage to operate without detection because the normal people find them heinous and avoid them.

Religious/racial moderates of the majority should speak out against the right-wingers and create a buffer for the minorities.

The word moderates has no meaning. What does that even mean? Let us take racism or religious bigotry. Does a moderate practise these moderately?

@psyah yes, police should be more friendly to people. they should train 8-10 sadbhavna mitra or communal harmony volunteers who would organise friendly activities, enhance co-ordination and at times inform police about conditions. There are abt one NGO over 600 people, NGO irrespective of their task should take responsiblity to aware people and teach ppl not to give ear to rumours, not to follow violent/hate speeches. And organise activities that enhance mutual respect.
