It is stupidity of Indians and their junk technology that is not in their own control. There were 4 commercial flights, including 2 international flights in the area at the time and well within the range of the missile. It could have been a commercial aviation disaster. As far as preparedness of the Pakistani military is concerned, they were able to track it from the point of it's launch within India, and since it is peace time no countermeasures were in place. Moreover, there is no anti-missile system in the world that can hit missiles with certainty when launch site is so close. Efficacy of anti-missile systems slightly improve when there are continents and oceans between the launch-site and target.
One good thing that could come out of it is that if the missile is recovered in good condition by Pakistan then it could be studied and reverse engineered like what was done in the 1990s with Tomahawks.
