Indian team to get open-top motorcade reception on arrival

MUMBAI: The proud winners of the Twenty20 World Cup will be given a rousing open-top-motorcade reception by citizens after they arrive in Mumbai from South Africa on Wednesday morning.

The squad which defeated arch rivals Pakistan in Johannesburg on Monday to lift the title, will travel in an open-topped bus from the airport at Andheri in north-west Mumbai to Wankhede Stadium in South Mumbai, where a felicitation function for the players will be held by the Cricket Board.

The squad is to be received at the airport by BCCI president Sharad Pawar before victorious captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the rest of the team members are taken in a 30-km long motorcade to the stadium.

The players’ felicitation function will be held at around 1030 hrs on the stadium lawns, BCCI said.

Indian Cricket in safe hands, says Tendulkar

Lavishing praise on the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Indian team for winning the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup, batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar said Indian cricket was now in safe hands.
Tendulkar, along with ageing stalwarts Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, had opted out of the Twenty20 event while Dhoni was named captain of a young side that went all the way to win the title beating arch-rivals Pakistan.
Tendulkar hailed Monday night’s win as a complete team effort and singled out Dhoni for special praise. “It was a brilliant team effort and along with the players, the entire nation is celebrating. Dhoni led the team to a fabulous victory and I can say that Indian cricket is in safe hands,” he said.
Another former captain, Sourav Ganguly, also heaped praise on Dhoni and said India had found an able leader in the star Jharkhand player.
"Dhoni is special. We needed a leader like Dhoni. It was a fantastic win and the team needed this kind of performance.
“The temperament the boys have shown under pressure is outstanding,” Ganguly said from Kolkata.
India’s 1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev said with this win, Dhoni and his teammates had become part of Indian cricket lores.
“I can guess that they are now so overwhelmed in joy that it would take time before the feeling sinks in. When they come back, they would realise that they have become part of history,” Kapil said.
“We won the World Cup in 1983 but still whenever World Cup takes place, people call us, remember us. The love and affection that await them would make them realise the magnitude of the achievement,” he said.
“I remember meeting (former Prime Minister) Rajiv Gandhi, who told me that he was keen to know the score of a match involving India while he was flying and he finally went to the pilot, requesting him to update him,” Kapil reminisced.
His World Cup teammate Madan Lal too felt that September 24 would go down in the history of Indian cricket.
“I had lot of hopes on this team and they delivered. It’s an unforgettable moment not only for the players but also for all of us,” he said.

Dravid heaps praise on Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Monday came in for rich praise from his predecessor Rahul Dravid, who felt India deserved to win the Twenty20 World Cup because of their amazing consistency.
“Congratulation to Dhoni and his team. They played fantastic cricket throughout and certainly deserved to win the tournament,” Dravid said.
Along with Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, Dravid had opted out of the Twenty20 World Cup and the former captain said, “In every match they got one or two scintillating performance and that contributed to the success. Those were critical performances.”
“It was a total team effort all along. I think the support staff also deserve a pat for their effort. It was great fun watching the tournament and the way they played,” Dravid said.

Re: Indian Media goes berserk.....

Honestly, its amazing how much hype this tournament is getting now.....just a month ago this tournament was considered insignificant enough for Tendu/Dravid/Gangu/Zaheer to consider giving it a miss.

I wonder if these "seniors" are second-guessing their decision now.

Re: Indian Media goes berserk…

India’s win sparked off celebrations all over the country.

^ don't worry Tendu will be around for the next edition of twenty-20 WC in 2009 in England :p

Re: Indian Media goes berserk…

thanks for the link. Gosh they go crazy in India when the team wins something big like this

Re: Indian Media goes berserk.....

Typical Indian media...Just imagine what would have happened had they lost? They would have demanded head of Dhoni.

Re: Indian Media goes berserk.....

Not sure if I agree with you.A close finish is more thrilling than a one-sided affair (so it usually gets more coverage).

Also, being a regular reader of Dawn, I can tell you that Dawn's reporting of the pre-final buildup was more extensive than of the actual match itself.

But I am not really blaming Dawn (or Pak media). I am sure Indian media would have done the same if India had lost (esp in a heart-breaking close encounter).

How did they work that one out :aq:

Re: Indian Media goes berserk…

videocon ad, i thought it was very creative…enjoy

Re: Indian Media goes berserk.....

Very Creative Videocon

Re: Indian Media goes berserk.....

I feel Indian media is going overboard with this.

Yes, it was a great performance by the Indians...but the media (and companies -like Videocon above) is clearly trying to exploit the emotions of the public to the fullest extent possible. This is "commercial over-the-top jingoistic journalism" not neutral reporting.

Re: Indian Media goes berserk…

One just has to read this bit from Mid-Day to realize how TRASHY Indian media can get :

Joginder in Hall of fame

JOHANNESBURG: “It’s not whether you get knocked down; it’s whether you get up.” Legendary NFL coach Vince Lombardi, who wrote these inspiring lines would have been proud of Joginder Sharma.

India’s rookie pace bowler came back after being dealt the knock-out blow by Misbah-Ul-Haq in the last over of the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 Cup final yesterday.

With Pakistan needing 13 runs, Sharma came under extreme pressure after Misbah-ul-Haq hit him for a six. But he did well to hold his nerve to send Misbah packing and India won by five runs.

Do these people know anything about cricket. Misbah created his own downfall…Joginder did nothing special.

Re: Indian Media goes berserk.....

Yesterday on Aaj Tak, Madan Lal and the other commentators on there said India would beat Australia 7-0, and prove to the world what it really means to be the new world champions.

Now they have gone over board.
