New Delhi: In a significant step, the Government today cleared Indian Cricket Board’s proposal for participation in junior tournaments involving Pakistan.

The Government has also given the go-ahead to Pakistan’s participation in the inaugural Afro-Asian Games scheduled to be held in Hyderabad in October-November.

Making the announcements, External Affairs Ministry spokesman today said the Government has cleared proposals received from BCCI that includes a triangular series among the ‘Academy’ teams of India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka.

A quadrangular series of one-day matches among the ‘Under-19’ teams of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Pakistan has also been approved by the government, he said.

Another BCCI proposal for a triseries of one-day matches involving the ‘A’ teams of India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in India has been cleared, the spokesman said.

He said these steps have been taken in continuation of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s peace initiatives and as part of promoting people to people contact and cultural exchanges.

India severed bilateral cricket ties with their arch-rivals after the Kargil conflict in 1999. The two countries, however, continued to play in multi-nation tournaments including the World Cup 2003 in South Africa.

The Pakistan cricket team had played in India in 1999 but India have not undertaken a tour of that country since 1989.

A very welcome step. Hope this will also remove any objection whatsoever of Indian Govt to play against the Senior Pakistani team.

dair ayeed durast ayeed

lets hope that its "foundation stone" and from here-on the relationship is strengthened and national teams are also allowed.

nothing unexpected. next upcoming series between india and pakistan is being hosted by india so obviously they will try to amend the relations to host pakistan and make profit and after the series we'll see a few acts of terrorism, india will accuse pakistan for that and they will again cut off cricketing relations with pakistan. :~)

^ you make it sound like stock market timing. Would have been funny but for the underlying terrorist atrocity that keeps occuring.

As far as i remember Tauqeer Zia has already said that Pakistan will visit India only if India visit's Pakistan first in this case your argument is in vain.

But I think both teams have agreed that India will visit Pak because they failed to do that the last time around.
Its a very different thing if the Indians do visit Pakistan, but if they are going to have series, then India will play in pakistan.

I really do not get why India had cut off just cricketing ties with Pakistan? India plays with Pakistan every other sport at almost all the levels except for cricket.

Apart from that I think the Indians have really wasted an opportunity to win overseas. Until this Bangladesh tour Pakistan had a very poor record at home, India has a much stronger side then Pakistan right now and for the recent past. There cricketing God, Tendulkar, is alive and playing and supposedly on his prime then why oh why are they not thinking …
If I was an Indian then I would really want India to tour Pakistan now because they have one of the best teams India has produced for a long, long time… this is probably one of the best chance they will ever get to beat Pakistan in Pakistan, and also an overseas victory? Or are they so unsure of themselves?
