Indian men will soon be able to buy tailor-made condoms.
The Union Health Ministry, which had launched a project in January to study the "average size" of the Indian male organ, may soon make it mandatory to mention the length of condoms on packets.
The ministry believes that condoms failed because one size doesn't fit all, officers of the Uttar Pradesh Medical and Health Directorate said.
The Rs 11-crore project hopes to bring down the present 20 per cent failure rate of condoms due to breakage or spillage.
According to the UP AIDS Control Programme Chairman, Dr Bacchiter Singh, the project in seven centres around the country, has been using volunteers at hospitals to measure the length and width of their erect organs with a digital camera.
Sizing up Indian males, it is hoped, would make the family planning programme more successful and save hospitals from the burden of abortions. High failure rate of condoms is also responsible for rise in the incidence of AIDS and HIV cases.
Officials at the UP Family Planning Department say that condom failure is largely responsible for spread of AIDS in dhabas, where truck drivers on long distance travel stop for sex with prostitutes.
Officials said that condoms are currently made in one single specified size. Earlier, it was believed that "free-size condoms", like free-size socks, would fit one and all. But experts hold the view as erroneous.
The ministry also plans to develop scented condoms for the Indian male, hoping it would boost up sales.
