Priyanka is hot.
Actually I am very much enthused by Sonia's "foren" origin. May be she will bring a more international, less caste and clan based perspective. Not being either Hindu or Muslim there might be a more even handed treatment of minorities. Being Italian by birth, Europe might tilt towards India. I hope her election is a harbinger of a new way to govern India.

Sincerely disagree. All Gandhi women (starting from Indira) are too masculine for me.
Sonia Gandhi became an Indian citizen only in 1983 when Rajiv Gandhi entered politics.
I am not sure how much she knows about regional poltics, handling different states and politicians. Of course her kids are there to help.
I think Rahul Gandhi has entered politics and would be a PM candidate in next few years.
BJP loss:
Couple of reasons.
Middle class Indians and Rich Indians do not go to vote. They would rather watch a movie, go on vacation than vote.
They were too confident. Did not make the right alliances with regional parties.
Indian voters like change. They voted Congress this time, next time they may rout Congress.
Benazir getting an itch after another woman Sonia won the elections in India. Already Khaleda Zia is in power in Bangladesh.
Poll showcases India’s democratic strength: Benazir
Islamabad | May 14, 2004 2:38:57 PM IST
Describing elections in India as an internal matter of that country, former Pakistan premier Benazir Bhutto, however, said that Thursday’s results were reflective of the strength of Indian democracy.
In a statement issued on her behalf by her Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Benazir expressed the hope that “civil society must be watchful of the elements on both sides who did not wish peace to break in the region only to promote their corporate vested interests.”
“Elections in India is also a continuation of democratic process in that country which we welcome,” she was quoted by the paper as saying, adding that there were lessons in it for those in Pakistan who had subverted the Constitution and suspended the democratic process for their personal political ends.
“Adventurers in Pakistan should learn a lesson or two for the Indian elections and show respect for the will of the people expressed through fair and free elections,” she said.
Hindus go ahead in choosing a christian pm of non-indian origin. whereas pakis worry too much for a hindu india. interesting!

I don't see what teh problem is with Sonia becoming the PM. She has lived in India for 35 years and has Indian nationality. Whats the problem? Does it say in the Indian constitution that the PM has to be born in India or that a non hindu cannot become a PM?

Her inexperience worries me. After all she was a house wife. How much does she know about world politics, foreign affairs, economy, social divisons.
Hope she is not a puppet P. Like Devegowda and Gujral her govt. will fall without proper leadership.
Sonia will be a great PM and will also prove to be the perfect dose for Pak-India relations. I see great things for both peoples. She's going to be a strong leader, people griping about her roots need to wisen up. She's lived in India more than many Indians (including most on this message board). Plus, it's the advisors you have that matters more than anything. Let India set the world an example.
Excellent thoughts TUMS :k: I agreewhole heartedly. One man/woman does not a country or policy make (in a democracy)

WHo could be her puppet master?
I hope this is just an statement b commies for the consumption of their votebase.
One thing these election results have shown is that Indians don't know how to conduct proper opinion polls. :-P
Man, how could every one get it so wrong? It either they don't do scientific polls, or there was huge media bias expecting a BJP win and the polls were spun to reflect that. Or may be there was a huge sea-change of vote swing on election day.

I think this is the issue. They are just importing methodologies from outside and are not able to adapt those systems to Indian condition. Voting in India is very complex ,lots of thing play roles like caste, religeon, cash, danda etc. Ia m not sure these factors are being considered fully or being considered correctly.
I have seen this in last 10 years that most of the time they get it wrong.
SIX months back they got it wrong in 3 states during assemply elections.
Also for the last 10 years every poll said that Laloo is losing in Bihar.Lekin laloo hai ke samose ke aalu ki tarah hat hi nahi raha hai.
I think it is time to EXIT the exit polls in India.
i think F&B you are confusing Opinion polls with exit polls - opinion polls had predicted tha BJP would win whereas exit polls had already passed the verdict that there would be a setback for NDA
FYI exit polls are conducted during the election - typically they ask people who come out of the polling booths and form the verdict.

No I am talking about EXIT poll. Yes they predicted that there will be setback for NDA. But they were way off the mark. Of all the exit polls ,worst scenario for NDA was around 240 and NDA was 50 less than that.
This mean 20% off the mark. You dont need an exit poll to predict this kind off result.I can do that sitting here in USA.
Guys, I tell you.. if you get even the exit polls wrong, then there is something seriously wrong :p
Dude, thats when people have ALREADY voted. If someone can't even capture that info correctly, then Allah hi hafiz hai.
Pre-election opinion polls ki tau naa hi poocheiN.
I think sampling is wrong... they may be just polling people in Bombay, Delhi (baray baray shehr) while the mood in the rural areas may be diametrically different.

I dont think they would be that naive to just go to big cities. But even if they go to rural areas they might be picking wrong samples.
