Sydney-born executive chef Mathew Cropp, who has worked in many Asian hotels, sees the personal human touch surviving in food service. Some restaurants could be using table-top gadgets allowing guests to directly place orders with the kitchen. But he expects they won’t be popular.
Indian and Thai cuisine, Cropp believes, will rule the world like Chinese cuisine did the late 20th century. Indian restaurants, he expects, will dot the globe - continuing a trend that first began in 1809 at 34 George Street, Portman Square, London, where one Dean Mohammed from Patna, Bihar, opened the Hindostanee Coffee House - the first Indian restaurant outside India.
Well all Pakistani and Bangladeshi cuisine is marketed at least in US as Indian cuisine. I have rarely found restaurants classified under "Pakistani" category.
Sorry dont mean to offend anyone but I dont really think indian restaurants are expert in cooking such delicacies as lamb curry, chicken curry, sajji, chapli kebobs. Basically, anything to do with meat. Unless its an upperclass restaurant like Gay Lords maybe that caters to a broader patrons. It all boils down to knowing how to cook them in a cetain way or spicies used and i think our Pakistani cooks and restaurants do a better job. Althought they dont get the same exposur as perhaps the indian restaurants.
5Abi, I agree with you, what I don't understand is why our Pakistan Restaurant chefs don't advertise the food as Pakistani food ?? maybe this way they will get more customers as Indian food is more known in the world as Bangali or Pakistan, but why dont we form our own Mark or just call it Indian Pakistani food not just Indian ?
Here in NZ in my city there is only one Pakistani resturant and which proudly calls itself Pakistani. But now the Indian resturants in this area are going down. Cuz here Indians they don't know anything else then Butter Chichken here. And the kiwis are full of it also. So its time for use to rule.
Actually the food marketed as Indian food is more the cusine of the North, (and this would be similar to Pakistani or Bangladeshi food?).
But I have rarely seen South Indian food marketed as such, idli, dosa, steamed and fried rice dishes, appams, the list goes on and on. And yes there is excellent range of Non-veg food also, main emphasis on Chicken and Mutton but if you go really down south, fish and beef rules...
The cuisines are Chettinad, Malabar, Udupi (veg), Mangalorean etc...
i agree with toddy here, most indian places i have been to have north indian cuisine, many owned by indian punjabis.
as far as southern restaurants being marketed, there are several in chicago, there are some even outside teh devon area, one in schaumburg or arlington heights called chowpatti,
I would say that there are some things that are almost always better in Pakistani places meat dishes and kebabs and also stuff liek biryani and pulao.

Why can't you call it 'Pakistani food', period. It'll take time but the world will soon start recognising Pakistani food as different from Indian, and that way customers will get a choice of two cuisines.
I've been to 2 Pakistani restaurants (not counting the ones which say Indian but are Pakistani and I have no way of knowing which ones are those) and been dissappointed. I chose the wrong ones I'm sure.
Indian cuisine in India is fabulous. Down south there are plenty of meat dishes, even pork and beef, and they are different from the rich mughlai food that you get in the north. There is more coconut used, and some of it is similar to Portugese cuisine. What gave you the idea that Indian cuisine is only dal and veg? Although we do great veg food, thats for sure.
What people think is Indian food is mostly Pakistani food. Many Indians I know would never eat things like beef kababs, even chicken tikka or mutton due to religious restrictions that prohibit eating meat.
Usually I find that resteraunts that are advertised as "Indian" are owned and operated by Pakistanis or Sikhs. Boths groups generally don't like being associated with India.

Errr.. so U think nobody in India eats meat? In India.. most of the restaurants serve all kinds of non-veg dishes including kebabs, chiken tikka, moghlai biryani etc. And mostly Brahmin Indians and Jains don't consume meat due to religious reasons.. and now even they have started eating meat on a small scale.
So if u think just cause Indian restaurants in U.S or U.K serve non-veg they are pakistani.. u cudn't be more wrong. And U might find the food similar coz most of the north Indian cuisine is similar to Paki cuisine in a lot of ways.
And how does being a Sikh makes one a Non-Indian?
And how many restaurant owners have ya talked to who run their thing as Indian but are pakistani in reality?

I'm sorry,, likley I am being to general, I can only talk about where I live - most of the Sikhs are Khalistanis who came here in the 80's.
As for Indians who eat meat, I am sure a lot do - I can only talk about the ones that I know.
I find that Hindus from India(new immigrants) tend to eat mostly veggies, while the ones born in the west eat whatever..... From this I would suspect that in India most Hindus don't eat meet, of course I could be wrong.
pakistanis restaurent owners know if they don't call it Indian food, they typically will have a tough time getting nonpakistani customers. just like cultural heritage, there is in fact no such thing as a distinct and complete pakistani cuisine. most of you probably have / had grandfathers and great grandfathers who were Indians. It takes more time to develop such identity
You are WRONG. You have met a handful of Indians and have an opinion on 1 Billion INDIANS ?? As for Sikhs being anti-India, well I am yet to see a sikh calling his restaurant ‘KHALISTANI RESTAURANT’. I am sure neither have you.
^ well if you eat meat great for you, I recall there were riots in India because muslims were eating cows,,, I am guessing there was a reason for that (something religious perhaps)
As for the Sikh thing, no they don't call it Khalistani (they are better businessmen than that) But I have NEVER heard India anything. Usually resteraunts are named Punjab this or that
Elahi, either you shut yourself now and let people think you are stupid or continue to post and remove all doubts.
Obviously, you have no clue about India or Indians otherwise you wouldn't make comments like -
-Sikhs dont like to associate themselves with Indians.
-Sikh restaurants dont have the word INDIA in their name.
-There was a riot in India when Muslims ate beef (whatever that means :)).
-Most "Indian" restaurants are owned by Pakis or Sikhs.
-New Immigrants from India are veggies.
You are funny , that much I will tell you.
BTW, there is a sikh restaurant not far from where I live in SF Bay Area. You can see its name from far. It reads " INDIA PALACE", While on the subject another well known sikh-owned chain in the Bay Area is TASTE OF INDIA.
