Indian and US navies begin joint exercises

Indian and US navies begin joint exercises off India’s western coast 06-10-2004

PANAJI: Navy officers from the United States and India tracked aircraft and landed helicopters on warships sailing in formation off India’s western coast as part of joint exercises that began Tuesday.

More than 1,000 navy personnel from India and the United States are participating in the five-day exercises called “Malabar 2004.” Both navies communicated with each other during helicopter deck landings and aircraft tracking exercises on Tuesday.

Another maneuver involved refueling at sea with a US cruiser taking in 80,000 gallons (302,825 liters) of fuel from an Indian oil tanker.

What’s the point of all these military exercises?

Many points. Both political as well strategic! Like debugging a program after coding, these exercises help in many ways. To name a few:

  1. Removing any bugs in procedures for military ops.
  2. Confirmation of radio frequencies and the use of code words
  3. Sending signal to Iran that American navy can reach it from many places.

  4. If you haven't been to one. It is a lot of fun working with a different navy. It gives US sailors something to look forward to.

  5. It establish long term, first name based contacts between the two militaries.

p.s. No. 5 is very important for Pak-military. Pakistan is doing very poorly on joint exercise front. Karachi and Gawadar are the havens for Old commies turned Moolahs these days. Their terror tactics has scared away civil and military visitors from US. It will hurt Pakistan in the long run.

Can the Pakistani military rely on the Americans no matter what the Pakistanis do for them?

I mean Pakistan has 75,000 troops against the Afghanistani border so the Americans don't feel scared and outnumbered, this is despite in 2002 when the nuclear flashpoint was ignited, 1,000 Americans in PAF were packing up and readying to go home... for some reason, Pakistani security didn't matter to them anymore!
