COLOMBO (AFP) - Indian and Pakistani youngsters are set to revive cricketing ties between the two nations when the Asian emerging teams tournament one-day international series gets underway here.

Indian captain Gautham Ghabir said: “We look forward to the tournament and it’s nice to play Pakistan in Sri Lanka. It will be a great opportunity for us.”

His Pakistani rival Qaiser Abbas said: “We have a very good young side. We hope we can go on to win.”

India and Pakistan play each other in the first round game at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo Sunday.

India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka play each other twice before the final on October 5.

The Secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket Mohan De Silva said the tournament was part of an initiative of the Asian Cricket Council, which had provided almost 75 percent of the funding.

De Silva said eligibility for the tournament was limited to those players who had played no more than two Tests and five one-day internationals.

The hosts play India in the curtain-raiser on Saturday

Sri Lanka beat India in Emerging Teams Trophy opener

COLOMBO: Hosts Sri Lanka gained the full six points from their opening match in the Emerging Teams Trophy cricket tournament, here at the R Premadasa Stadium on Saturday, as they defeated India comfortably by a nine-wicket margin. The India Emerging Team was bowled out for 136 runs in the 41st over while the Sri Lanka Emerging Team romped home having lost only one wicket, and with 17.4 overs to spare.

Medium-pacer Lasith Malinga, who captured four wickets for 16 runs in 7.1 overs, ran through the Indians after they had been put in to bat. Earlier, India had lost their first three wickets with just two runs on the board and only eight deliveries bowled. Left-hander Sivaramakrishnan Vidyut (25 off 48 balls with two fours) and Ambati Rayudu, who scored 34 off 66 deliveries with three boundaries, then added 57 runs for the fourth wicket in 18.1 overs.

The 18-year-old Dinesh Karthik, the team’s wicket-keeper, hit 42 off 52 balls with a six and a four and managed to take the score to 131 in the 39th over. But by then nine wickets had been lost. The Sri Lanka Emerging Team’s winning effort was powered by a 117-run opening stand, which was easily managed in 27.4 overs.

Nishad Paranavithana returned unbeaten with 55 runs, made off 99 balls and including four fours. The left-handed Upul Tharanga was dismissed with 57 runs to his name, which came off 86 deliveries and included six boundaries.

Result: Pakistan Emerging Team won by 37 runs

 :k:

Yo Man, this ‘Fahad Masood’ dude is a brilliant fast-medium pacer, got perfect line and length. He had a fantastic tour against South Africa Academy last month and yesterday when Pakistan batting collasped, he took over, bowled really well, named Man of the Match.

Is it just me or the pitches in Sri Lanka are sometimes way-too friendly to the bowlers? Nevertheless, good win for Pakistan. :k: Let’s see how Pakistan performs against host Sri Lanka today.

Sweet :jhanda:

I was awake till PAK got all out for 137 and I thought PAK may lose but great news that PAK won.

It’s good to see Pakistan win. Fahad Masood :k:

Fahad bowls Pakistan to quick 37-run win over India

COLOMBO: Pakistan won the battle of the old rivals when they defeated India in a low-scoring Emerging Teams Trophy cricket tournament match, here at the R Premadasa Stadium on Sunday, by 37 runs after having shot their opponents out for just 100 in 22.5 overs. Earlier Pakistan, who were put in, had themselves managed only 137 all out in 38.4 overs.

The hero of the day for the Pakistan Emerging Team was pace bowler Fahad Masood, who captured four wickets for 30 runs in six overs and was declared Man of the Match. His partner Junaid Zia, the Pakistan vice-captain, took 3-35 while medium-pacer Yasir Arafat bagged the remaining three wickets at a personal cost of 30 runs.

When Pakistan batted, opener Babar Naeem scored 34 runs off 75 balls with one boundary. By the start of the 20th over, the score was 67 and only one wicket had been lost. Then five wickets were gone with the addition of only 22 runs and although Yasir Arafat (28 off 48 balls with two fours) batted responsibly the eventual total was just 137. India’s best bowlers were left-arm medium-fast Irfan Pathan with four for 22 and right-armer Aavishkar Salvi, who finished with three for 27.

The Extras topscored with 23 in India’s innings. ( :hehe: ) Laxmi Ratan Shukla though contributed 21 off 25 deliveries which included as many as five boundaries. Only three other batsmen managed to cross double-figures.

In the three-nation young players cricket championship, Pakistan will meet hosts Sri Lanka in their next match here at the R Premadasa Stadium today (Monday). The tournament is being played on a double-league basis, and each team gets four matches before the final on October 5. Pakistan will meet Sri Lanka again, at the P Sara Stadium, on October 2 and India the next day, at the same venue.
