India, Pakistan face off in Abu Dhabi on May 14

Abu Dhabi : A Sourav Ganguly-led Indian XI will battle with an Inzaman-ul-Haq-led Pakistan XI for the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Cup in a day-night encounter at the Zayed Cricket Stadium here on Friday, May 14.

Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Cricket Control Board (ADCCB) and B.R Shetty, President and Managing Director of ADCCB, announced details of the match which offers a total prize money of US $100,000, the highest for a one-day match in the history of the game.

Fresh from their historic triumph during their recent tour of Pakistan, the entire Indian team excepting Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag will be seen in action while Pakistan will be in full strength except for Shoaib Akthar, who may not be seen in action.

Though the May 14 encounter is not an official one-day International, the Indian cricket team’s trip to Abu Dhabi will be their first visit to the UAE in four years since they stopped playing in offshore centres.

India last played in Sharjah in March 2000 in the three-nation Coca Cola Cup with eventual winners Pakistan and South Africa (runners-up) being the other two teams.

“Thanks to the Indian and Pakistan Cricket Boards and the players who have all agreed to support cricket in the capital,” Sheikh Nahyan said.

“We are happy that India and Pakistan, the two countries with whom the UAE shares exemplary relations, should kick-start international competition here,” added Sheikh Nahyan.

“Sehwag will not be coming due to his recent marriage while we are still trying to get Tendulkar, who will be in London with his family,” said Shetty during a press conference yesterday.

“It is a dream-come-true for us to start off with an India-Pakistan match. With both Sourav and Inzaman leading full strength teams, cricket fans in the UAE and the region can expect an intense battle for the Sheikh Zayed Cup and the US$100,000,” Shetty said. There will also be two cars, one for the best player from each side on offer.

"Almost all the players readily agreed to play here. When told of the US$ 100,00 prize money India’s vice captain said, ‘It will be hell for the leather,’ Ravi Pandit, ADCCB General Secretary said.

“The day-night match will start at 3.30 pm and we will be organising transport both ways for the fans,” added Pandit. The Zayed Cricket Stadium, which is located in Umm Al Nar area about 20kms from the main city, has a 20,000-plus capacity.

India rule out gulf fixture](BBC SPORT | Cricket | India rule out gulf fixture)

India will not allow its top players to take part in a one-day game against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi next month.

Officials in the United Arab Emirates want to stage a special match on 14 May to mark the opening of the new £12m Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

But Indian Board secretary Karunakaran Nair ruled out their involvement.

“The Board has neither accorded its approval for any such match nor would it release any of its current cricketers for the proposed match.”

Weekend reports suggested that India would be sending a strong team to the gulf, although Sachin Tendulkar and newly married Virender Sehwag would not be involved.

“We are happy that India and Pakistan, the two countries with whom the UAE share exemplary relations, should kick-start international competitions here,” said Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak al-Nahyan, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Cricket Control Board.

They now face the task of trying to persuade senior BCCI officials to change their minds and allow an Indian team to take part.

But India have not played in the UAE since a police report, published four years ago, suggested such venues could be a target for would-be match-fixers.

The Indian team is currently taking a break from the game after an exhausting period which saw them play Test and one-day series in Australia and Pakistan.

They are due to return to action in the six-nation Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, beginning in mid-July.

It will be followed by a three-team tournament in Holland which will act as a warm-up for the ICC Champions Trophy in England in September.

Pakistan will also be involved in all three competitions.

Quite a sensible stance, I think.

It makes no sense to play a match in the middle of nowhere which has no bearing on international rankings. These kinda silly exhibition matches played for the entertainment of rich sheikhs are what A/B teams are for. Lets hope the PCB can grow a backbone and stand up for its players like the BCCI.
