Indian-Americans most upwardly mobile

WASHINGTON: Indian-Americans are one of the most upwardly mobile immigrant communities in the United States, and though their precise number is not known, it is believed to be at least three times more than that of Pakistanis.
According to one estimate, there are 3.22 million Indians in America — 1.5 percent of the population..
The co-founder of Sun-Microsystems, one of the top technologies companies in the country, is Vinod Khosla, an Indian, as is the man who created the Pentium chip, Vinod Dahm.
According to a report in Fortune magazine, the third richest man in the world is Azim Premji, an Indian. The founder and creator of Hotmail, the world’s leading web-based e-mail programme, is an Indian by the name of Sabeer Bhatia.
The president of AT&T Bell Laboratories is also an Indian named Arun Netravalli, while the general manager of Hwelett-Packard, an American technology giant, is Rajiv Gupta, another Indian. The testing director of Microsoft Corporation is Sanajay Tejwrika, an Indian. The chief executive of Citibank Victor Menezes is also Indian.
According to another estimate, 12 percent of US scientists are Indian. Indians make up 36 percent of NASA scientists, 34 percent of Microsoft employees and 28 percent of IBM employees.
