Sarwan Shows Nerves of Steel
Ramnaresh Sarwan said the sight of his team-mates willing him on allowed him to hit the last ball four needed for victory in the first one-day international in India.
The 22-year-old batsman was the hero of the hour after his team recorded a four-wicket win.
And it all came after crowd trouble marred the final denouement - the players had been forced off the field with three overs remaining.
“I was always thinking positive,” said Sarwan whose unbeaten on 83 from 89 deliveries included six fours and three sixes.
He shared in an 87-run third wicket partnership with opener Wavell Hinds, who top-scored with 93.
“I could see everyone standing on the dressing room balcony and that motivated me,” said Sarwan.
“I was looking for a yorker. I thought the best chance would be to hit straight or through extra cover,” he added.
West Indies skipper Carl Hooper was full of praise for his batsmen for surpassing India’s formidable 283 total.
“They were brilliant, it was good to see the batsmen held their nerve,” he said.
He was saddened, however, by the crowd trouble.
“I have experienced it before in India, but I am a bit disappointed to see it again in 2002,” he added.
Match referee Mike Procter said he was frightened by the situation.
“It was very scary to see firecrackers were being thrown into the ground and bursting close to the fielders,” he said.
**“Both teams displayed their professional outlook and carried on after the policemen moved in to curb the violence.” **
International Cricket Council chief executive Malcolm Speed said he was awaiting a report from Procter.
“It is disappointing that a game has been interrupted, and Mike’s report will help us understand why this has taken place,” he added.
“Player safety is critical and incidents of this type should not happen.”
