England won what they hoped would be an influential toss on a cloudy day in Cardiff as the Royal London ODI series got underway at the second time of asking with reasonable expectations that the match might just beat the rain heading in from the west by early evening.
India were seeking release after their 3-1 defeat in the Investec Test series, but as their captain, MS Dhoni, gazed longingly at a surface he quite fancied a bowl on, he would not have been confident that release would come immediately.
“We would have liked to bowl first with the early start and the rain forecast,” Dhoni said. “But the freedom to play shots in the one-day format will definitely help us.”
India found a place for Mohit Sharma, but there was no opportunity for Umesh Yadav - both played India’s last ODI against Bangladesh in June.
Alex Hales was picked for a delayed one-day debut as Alastair Cook’s opening partner with Ian Bell dropping down to No. 3 and Joe Root at No. 4, so ensuring no place for his Yorkshire team-mate Gary Ballance. England preferred Ben Stokes to Moeen Ali as the unsettled weather encouraged an emphasis on seam.
Cook spoke of the chance over a long run of unbroken one-day cricket to “improve as a team and hopefully peak at the right time”. They will need to do so quickly if critics of the make-up of the side are to be appeased.
