India v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Kanpur

Match facts
November 24-28, 2009
Start time 9.30am (0400 GMT)

India : (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 VVS Laxman, 6 Yuvraj Singh, 7 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Amit Mishra.

Sri Lanka: (probable) 1 Tharanga Paranavitana, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Nuwan Kulasekara/Dilhara Fernando, 9 Chanaka Welegedara, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Ajantha Mendis/Rangana Herath.

Dilshan broke his nose after colliding with a team-mate during practice but he has recovered and will play. Fast bowler Dammika Prasad, however, is likely to miss out after suffering a grade one hamstring strain. He could be replaced by either Nuwan Kulasekara or Dilhara Fernando. The big question, though, will be over the second spinner to partner Murali. Will Mendis be given a chance?

Pitch and conditions

The last time India played a Test in Kanpur, they prepared a spin track to trounce South Africa by eight wickets. They even opened the bowling with Harbhajan in the second innings. This time around the curator says it will be a sporting track with the spinners coming into play from the third day. A lot of attention has been showered on the pitch in the lead-up to this Test.

All the best to Team India :k:

Re: India v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Kanpur

I was watching Star news last night and they said the trouble is if they make a seaming pitch the Indian top order will be in trouble and if they make a spinners paradise, SL has better spinners.

Jaein toh jaein kahan
Samjahy ga kaun yahan
Dard bharey dil kee dua. :D

Best of luck.

Luckily for India, Murali is not in the best of form. Ajantha Mendis might come back for this test, and he has troubled Indian batsmen in the past. However, I don't agree with Star News assessment that the SL pacers can trouble Indian batsmen on Indian wickets :)

But cricket is an unpredictable game...anything can happen !!

No i guess what STAR meant that Indian batsmen will be troubled by any pacers (not just SL) on any seaming wicket :)

Even that does not make sense since Indian batsmen have taken on the best of pacers on their home turfs and come out on top :)

Re: India v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Kanpur

about Sehwag n pitch

[QUOTE]
He was in for a much bigger score here but the Sri Lankans have finally struck. Some consolation after dropping him on zero. But the pitch is a great one to bat on and the batsmen to follow have a solid platform to build on.

Re: India v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Kanpur

such pitches are a total disgrace to Test matches :nook:

Re: India v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Kanpur

India 417/2 off 90 overs. :smack:

This is a joke.

From cricinfo:

David tenant from the UK :“I imagine the curator has added a further 1 billion friends to his previous tally of zero on his Facebook page.”

Re: India v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Kanpur

Cricinfo:

That brings to an end a day that won't feature in any Sri Lankan bowler's career highlights package. Plenty of records tumbled, including the most runs scored in a day by India, as the home side amassed 417 for 2, with the help of quick centuries from Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag.
This is the fourth Test in a row in which Gambhir has scored a century, and this was the first time that Sehwag has been made a sub-150 triple-digit score since 2003. Rahul Dravid has also closed in on yet another century, while Tendulkar was solid after coming in late in the day.
There was plenty of criticism of the track after the first Test, but clearly the curator at Kanpur hasn't been listening. India may have made loads of runs, but he isn't a particularly popular man gauging from the feedback we have received today.

Re: India v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Kanpur

Unlesss India can do some bowling Miracle, another draw on the card!

Pretty lacklustre bowling from SL with the exception of Murali, and great batting by Indian openers :k: Dravid also looks set for another ton

This pitch is going to turn around Day 3, and we could have an exciting contest on the cards.

Re: India v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Kanpur

Another boring match. Let's see how many centuries we see in this test match. I say around 8.

LOL...and you know that after the first day's play ??

This is a typical Kanpur wicket...will start to spin around Day 3. Don't forget that this is the same ground where India had opened the bowling with Harbhajan Singh against SA resulting in an 8 wkt win for India.

Russell Arnold's commentary is something else. Never thought I'd find someone to rival Arun Lal, but this guy could take on both Lal and Sohail with one arm tied behind his back. Dhobi bhai, wherever you are, I hope you are watching the game - know you would really appreciate the skillage on display.

Re: India v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Kanpur

On a pitch "aao sub century karo" india is now 575/4.

Re: India v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Kanpur
