NEW DELHI: India expects to have half a billion phone connections in place by the end of the decade, a minister said Wednesday, as the country tries to better connect its sprawling rural population.
The country, home to more than a billion and one of the world’s fastest growing telecom markets, hopes to expand its number of connections to 250 million by the end of 2007, a jump of more than 30 per cent, Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran told reporters.
While telecom penetration is increasing in urban areas, vast swathes of India’s rural hinterland remain untapped, Maran said.
Out of the targeted 500 million phones by 2010, the minister said he wanted one-fifth to be in rural areas, and called for a huge infrastructure programme to meet the target. To make this possible, 18,000 new communications towers would be built under an infrastructure-sharing programme to support rural telecom connections.
Telephone penetration is currently around 25 per 100 people in urban areas, but as low as 1.6 per 100 in rural areas. afp
^ an achievement neverthless....but not a new news.
Credit should go to the previous NDA government.
The full privatisation of telecom industry initiated by NDA is paying off since last 2 years.
Myriads of new private operators have emerged-- due this call rates are cheapest, the main reason behind growth of telecom industry.
I think one of the major obstacles which still we can't overcome is the poor infrastructure.
There are still no proper roads and electricity in villages.
During each annual budget, government allocates huge funds for rural infrastructure development...still their is no implementation.
Worst...many a times state governments of UP and Bihar return the funds due to lack of implementation.
250 million by the the end of 2007 in a population of 1 billion implies it is 25%.
No India don't have 250 million connetions as we speak, what it says is "hope to have 250 million connections by the end of 2007" but as we speak 25 per 100 people in urban areas, but as low as 1.6 per 100 in rural areas..
At the end of March 2007 India had 206.83 million mobile phone subsriibers - a teledensity of only 18.31%. That proportion is as I said far lower than other countries in the region and in Asia.

This shld again boost the bullish global sentiments on India
